In the south of Andalusia, in the province of Huelva, stands the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Rocio, where annually,
on the day of Pentecost, about a million faithful gathered in brotherhoods (hermandades), coming from all over
Spain, meet to conclude their pilgrimage. Each brotherhood, based on its origin,
follows a different route that can last several weeks. The days of walking are marked by
a continuous resonance of instrumental music, songs and dances (especially sevillanas), which serve to
mark, in addition to the religious dimension, also the convivial aspect of what we can define as a 'rite of
transition'.
