Page-based virtual memory, which carves memory into fixed-size pages, forms the basis for all modern operating systems by providing the illusion of a huge memory space for running programs. Yet, since its development in the early 1960s, computing has diversified and memory capacities have grown by orders of magnitudes. I will talk about why virtual memory endures today, the challenges facing virtual memory in modern systems and new directions in retaining its enduring benefits.
