Educational goals and objectives

STRUCTURAL AND GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
The PhD in Structural and Geotechnical Engineering is a three-year program at the third level of university education, aimed at training highly qualified researchers and professionals. It provides advanced expertise in solid and structural mechanics, structural engineering, and geotechnical engineering, with the objective of developing the ability to conduct independent research, also in international contexts.

The program integrates theoretical, experimental, and computational approaches, promoting strong interaction with applications in civil and industrial engineering and other applied sciences. It is organized into research areas and scientific lines that combine the methodologies and expertise of the different disciplinary sectors.

The PhD is structured into three curricula. The first, Mechanics of Solids and Structures, focuses on fundamental and advanced aspects of material and structural mechanics. It emphasizes theoretical modeling and the development of analytical and numerical methods, addressing nonlinear formulations, constitutive modeling of traditional and advanced materials, multiscale phenomena, structural dynamics and stability, advanced computational techniques, and experimental validation.

The second curriculum, Structural Engineering, deals with the design, analysis, and safety of structures, with particular attention to extreme loads and seismic behavior. It includes reinforced concrete, steel, and masonry structures, risk and vulnerability assessment, retrofitting and strengthening techniques, structural monitoring, and the safety of complex infrastructures such as bridges and large-scale works, as well as the conservation of historical heritage.

The third curriculum, Geotechnical Engineering, focuses on the mechanical behavior of soils and rocks and the design of geotechnical works. It includes experimental characterization, analytical and numerical modeling, design of foundations, excavations and tunnels, slope stability, seismic response, and hydraulic processes in soils.

Overall, the program combines fundamental research and engineering applications, with a strong impact on design practice and innovation.
