Educational goals and objectives

JOINT INTERNATIONAL DOCTORATE IN SOCIAL REPRESENTATIONS, CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION
The Joint International Doctorate in Social Representations, Culture and Communication is an international, inter/trans-disciplinary and cross-sectoral PhD programme aimed at advanced training in the social sciences. The Doctorate covers the area at the intersection of Social Representation Theory, Cultural Studies and Communication Studies. The PhD programme is coordinated by Sapienza and awards a joint diploma with Universities of Pécs and Iasi. The programme involves a consolidated network of prestigious universities and international research centres (in Europe, Latin America, North-Africa, Asia), which makes it a point of reference for a vast scientific community in the social sciences. TRAINING GOALS The PhD aims to provide a solid theoretical and methodological preparation for continuation in the field of research, and in public and private employment sectors. PhD students will acquire advanced knowledge in the fields of social representation theory and its most recent developments, social and cultural psychology, sociology of culture and communication sciences, and related fields. They will develop soft skills relevant to social research on individual and collective behaviours, and in the research design, scientific communication and dissemination of results, and public relations. A further aim of the doctorate is to foster the ability to apply the acquired knowledge both in research activities and in public institutions and private companies, which require experts in areas of social and communication sciences. THEMES The PhD programme focuses on complex problems and socially relevant issues in the context of global, mediatised and culturally fragmented societies. Themes cross several transdisciplinary research areas, including: - Environmental sustainability and ecological transition, with primary reference to SDGs and energy transition processes, risk perception and socio-technological innovations; - Migration and intercultural relations, e.g. discursive processes in intergroup relations, stereotyping and inclusion, empowerment practices, - Health and education, e.g. health communication and practices, education practices, teaching of sensitive issues, social intervention, agency and advocacy, power and dialogue between scientific and lay knowledge; - Work and occupation, including social representations and occupational choices, work climate and organizational culture; - Processes of democratisation and construction of citizenship, including institutional discourse analysis and political psychology, populism, communication and affective dimensions of the public sphere, rights, power, peace psychology; - Diversity communication, minorities and inclusion, with particular reference to social influence of minority, violence, and to the role of media and journalistic discourse in framing and countering the discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, disabilities, migration, etc.

Admission Procedure

CV and Research Project The CV and the titles will be evaluated according to the following grid (max 20 points):
1.1 Curriculum: max 5 points
1.1.1 For students who have already graduated at the time of the evaluation of qualifications, the degree grade is considered (master's, specialist or single- cycle)
1.1.2 For students who will discuss the thesis after the evaluation of qualifications, the average of the marks achieved in the courses taken in the master's degree will be considered

1.2 Publications (JCR-ISI, not on JCR-ISI, books/chapters, abstract, presentations at conferences): max 5 points (max 3 points for each product)

1.3 Previous experiences (training, research, job): max 5 points

1.4 Other titles: max 5 points

Research Project (Max 40 points)

The research project will assessed to evaluated candidates methodological competences, propensity for research and his/her ability to plan and organise the research steps.
The project must not exceed a maximum length of 10000 characters (including spaces, excluding the bibliography).

In particular, the following will be assessed
Relevance of the project with the themes and training goals of the PhD, feasibility and coherence with the home institution (10 points);
Knowledge of the state of the art of the literature concerning the proposed theme and how it has been addressed by studies from the social representations, cultural and communication perspective (10 points);
Originality and innovative content (10 points);
Clarity and completeness of the presentation of objectives, methodologies and potential results (10 points).

Note: the project submitted does not constitute an obligation for admitted candidates to carry out the proposed project during their PhD.

Interview and Motivation letter Interview (max 40 points) + motivation letter
The interview has the aim of evaluating:
- the background of competences and skills related with the themes and approaches of the doctorate (max 20 points)
- motivations, research interest, methodological competences and research attitudes will be discussed also with respect to the proposed research, motivation letter and previous experiences (max 20 points)

The motivation letter, maximum 5000 characters including spaces, should clarify the applicant's objectives and motivation in pursuing an international joint doctorate, as well as clarify scientific motivations behind the choice of home institution indicated in the application

more info The candidates will have to indicate for which position, among those available in the signatory institutions, they intend to compete: Sapienza or Pécs or Iasi.
Admission will be based on the scientific quality of applications and the compatibility of the proposed doctoral project and of the motivation presented in the motivation letter with the themes and interests of the PhD programme, and of the tutors at the Universities indicated as 'home institution' (Sapienza or Pécs or Iasi.).
