Educational goals and objectives

STUDIES IN ENGLISH LITERATURES, CULTURES, LANGUAGE, AND TRANSLATION
The International PhD programme in English Literatures, Language and Translation (SELLT), with administrative base at Sapienza University of Rome and partner base at the University of Silesia in Katowicze, is aimed at students interested in the acquisition of up-to-date critical and cognitive tools that enable them to carry out specialised research in the field of English literature and linguistics, as well as in the cultural and disciplinary areas that may refer to them.
The scientific plan and the doctoral programme are developed through three curricula: 1) LANGUAGE AND TRANSLATION CURRICULUM, 2) LITERARY CURRICULUM - ANGLO-AMERICAN LITERATURE AND CULTURE, 3) LITERARY CURRICULUM - ENGLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE. The objectives are the acquisition of the mastery of up-to-date critical and cognitive tools enabling the elaboration of specialised research in the field of English-language literature and linguistics as well as in the cultural and disciplinary areas that may refer to them.
Specific aims will be to develop skills a) in the history and periodisation of literature, focusing on problems relating to the main periods, including the XXI century; b) in the analysis of texts, presented in the light of critical methodologies, especially those of English-speaking cultures c) in the connection with theories of literature, and with other literatures d) in the investigation of linguistic problems, seen both in their communicative specificity and in their literary and non-literary values, through the tools of contemporary stylistics and discourse analysis; e) in the investigation of theories, methods and approaches of Translation and Adaptation Studies, especially updated to the last 40 years; f) in the investigation of theories, methods and approaches related to the history of the English language, with particular attention to the studies of historical linguistics and pragmatics.

Admission Procedure

Commission-only procedure- Assessment of qualifications and research project Commission-only part of the competition procedure. In order for the candidate(s) to be admitted to the written test, the Commission will assess and score both the qualifications and the research project.
The candidate must submit a research project that can assess the candidate's ability to organise the different stages of the research activity in autonomy. The project is to be written in English. The text must be min. 7.000, max. 9.000 characters (including spaces, excluding bibliography. It is recommended to respect the minimum and maximum size). For candidates admitted to the programme, the project submitted for the competition may then be revised for the purposes of carrying out the research activity during the PhD.

Written examination The written exam is in English and will consist of writing a short essay on a proposed topic or producing a textual analysis of a literary/non-literary extract. The exam will last 4 (four) hours. The use of a monolingual dictionary is permitted. Candidates must choose one of the two curricula of the doctoral programme: a) literary and cultural studies -English literature; b) literary and cultural studies -Anglo-American literature c) linguistics and and translation studies. The Commission will prepare three topics for each curriculum and the examination question for each curriculum will be randomly chosen from the list. To prepare for the examination, candidates are advised to consult the reading list of the curriculum for which they are applying, available on this website. The examination will take place in person (unless the university decides otherwise).

Oral interview Interview on the research project. Failure to submit it will constitute grounds for exclusion from the competition. For the project proposal, candidates are advised to refer to the research areas of the doctoral programme and the professors who make up the College (see doctoral website).

--> Candidates are reminded that a reading list of reference texts for the three curricula has been compiled by the Doctoral Board for the preparation to the written test. This reading list can be found attached on the PhD website.

§ other document: Language certification
mandatory
By submitting a language certification along with their application, all applicants must demonstrate that they have reached a C2 in the knowledge of the English language. Certifications that are accepted Cambridge; IELTS (8.0-9.0); TOEFL (110- 20). Certification is not required for applicants whose mother tongue is English, though their status as native speakers of English will need to be supported by specific evidence (i.e. a high-school diploma obtained in a country whose official language is English). To be uploaded by the call deadline, the file must be uploaded within le ore 23:59 del 20/06/2024
