On 11 February 2020, the Board of the PhD in Linguistics nominate a Commission which formulated a proposal to review the structure of the training offer, approved by the Board at the meeting held on 23 October 2020. The new treaning plan provides for the use by PhD students of a certain number of hours - not credits - of frontal teaching activity common to all curricula and then of other diversified hours for the different curricula. The traning plan is organized into modules relating to topics of general methodological relevance. According to this approach, the training plan includes a frontal teaching offer common to all enrolled doctoral students and a specific offer for the various curricula.

For the academic year 2022-23, the educational plan includes a frontal teaching offer common to all enrolled PhD students and a specific offer for the various curricula. PhD students enrolled in the first year are required to attend at least 60 hours of the teaching envisaged in the training offer (30 for common teaching courses; 30 for curricular teaching courses); PhD students enrolled in the second year are required to attend at least 30 hours of courses chosen - in agreement with the tutors - among those present in the training offer. Attendance is free for third-year PhD students.

Method of choosing the subject of the thesis

The subjet of the thesis is normally the one proposed as a research project for admission to the Doctorate; it can be modified on the basis of the interaction of the doctoral student with the tutors, with approval by the Board.

Admission to the second year

Admission to the following year is decided by the PhD Academic Board every year in October, on the basis of (a) the positive evaluation by the tutors of at least one scientific work of publishable level, presented by the PhD students, possibly on a topic that prepare the draft of the thesis and (b) of the doctoral students' report on the progress of their research work.

PhD students enrolled in the second year are required to attend at least 30 hours of the training activities included in the overall teaching offer. The calendar of teaching activities, in addition to being communicated personally to the PhD students, is published on the PhD website.


In the second year of the course, doctoral students are also invited to increase participation in independently chosen training or research activities, such as attendance at conferences on the topics they deal with, summer or winter schools, refresher courses and seminars taught outside the PhD in Linguistics, always subject to the approval of the tutors.


Once a year, each doctoral student will have to hold a seminar on the state of his research. In addition to PhD students, tutors and interested members of the College may also take part in the seminar. This seminar will replace the presentation of the state of the works to the College for the purpose of moving to the third year of the course. Pursuant to the Operating Regulations of the Research Doctorate in Linguistics, for the transition of the year, doctoral students are required to present to their tutors at least one scientific work of publishable level, on a theme connected to the drafting of the thesis.



Method of preparation of the thesis

PhD students, in constant contact with their tutors, are required to define the corpus to be analyzed and/or the theoretical framework of reference for their research. During the second year it is also expected that they will spend the period of stay abroad.

Admission to the third year

Admission to the following year is decided by the PhD Academic Board every year in October, on the basis of (a) the positive evaluation by the tutors of at least one scientific work of publishable level, presented by the PhD students, possibly on a topic that prepare the draft of the thesis and (b) of the doctoral students' report on the progress of their research work.

PhD students enrolled in the third year are allowed free attendance of the training activities envisaged in the overall educational offer, to allow them to concentrate more on the topics of their primary interest, also in view of completing the drafting of the thesis. In the third year of the course, PhD students are invited to further increase their participation in independently chosen research activities, such as participation in conferences, also as speakers, always subject to approval by the tutors and, if necessary, by the Doctoral Board.

Method of admission to the final examination

For admission to the final exam, having heard the tutors, the theses are sent to two reviewers external to the Board (chosen among well-known scholars with specific expertise on the topic of the thesis): the opinion of the two reviewers determines the eventual admission to the final exam, which takes place by resolution of the Board.

Final examination

A commission of professors external to the Doctoral Board examines the doctoral theses and meets to discuss them with the PhD students.
