December 2017 – February 2020 Internship at the Institute of Anatomic Pathology, Policlinico Umberto I, Rome. Activities included: • Macroscopic diagnostic evaluation and specimen grossing • Light microscopy study of major pathological conditions (oncologic and non-oncologic) involving gastrointestinal tract, urogenital system, hematopoietic system, head and neck region, central nervous system • Participation in intraoperative frozen section diagnostics • Autopsy examinations
July 2016 Internship at the Parasitology Laboratory, Department of Public Health and Infectious Diseases, Policlinico Umberto I, Rome. Activities included: • Morphological study of major parasitic species by light microscopy on histological preparations and blood/stool samples • Malaria diagnosis on thin and thick blood smears
July 2015 Internship at the Virology Laboratory, Department of Molecular Medicine, Policlinico Umberto I, Rome. Activities included: • Diagnosis of HIV infection in blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples by Real-Time PCR and evaluation of antiretroviral drug resistance by sequencing • Diagnosis of Echovirus and Coxsackievirus infections • Cell culture maintenance with evaluation by light microscopy Research project • Spatial multi-omic profiling of the tumor microenvironment in EBV-related hematologic malignancies – Part I: how EBNA2 regulates miR-155. Identification, selection, and review of EBV-positive DLBCL cases with latency II and III, and creation of a database including semiquantitative morphological and immunohistochemical features. Analysis of the expression patterns of viral latency proteins (LMP1, EBNA2), highlighting the coexistence of different viral latency states within the same neoplastic proliferation. RNA extraction from tissue samples and quantification of miR-155 by RT-qPCR, with parallel investigations performed on in vitro models.
Data analysis and interpretation with a focus on microRNA regulatory mechanisms, particularly the role of the ZFP36L1 protein, and initiation of its immunohistochemical evaluation in tissue samples. • LEF-1 expression in CLL/SLL: multicenter clinicopathological and molecular study. Development and expansion of a retrospective multicenter study aimed at evaluating LEF-1 expression in CLL/SLL and correlating it with clinical, pathological, and molecular features. Collection and review of cases from multiple centers and establishment of a bicentric research project. • Molecular characterization of splenic B-cell leukemias/lymphomas with prominent nucleoli. Collection of cases of splenic-derived B-cell leukemia/lymphoma with prominent nucleoli and initiation of a molecular characterization project using exome sequencing, bulk RNA-seq, and potentially in situ transcriptomics. • Establishment of a lymph node tissue biobank. Development of a protocol for the collection of fresh material from excisional lymph node biopsies with the aim of creating a frozen tissue archive to support diagnostic and research activities.
