Germanic and Slavic Studies Double degree programme


        



Sapienza University of Rome and Charles University in Prague implemented a double degree joint doctoral study
 
 
 programme of Germanic and Slavic Studies.

An entrance examination takes place in both universities, as indicated in the announcement published every year by each university according to its regulations.

The examination will be focused on the research project emerging from a thorough study of the extant specialized literature. The candidate will present to the examination committee his/her work in the field, and his/her publications (if any) especially in connection with the research project proposed.
The selected candidates are assigned a supervisor from their home university and a co-supervisor from the partner institution. 
Study plan for the first year of study
PhD students will participate in mandatory seminars and lessons in each partner university. They will follow lessons at the home university about the methodology of literary-historical research, philological research and linguistic research.
They will study a foreign language: doctoral students of Germanic Studies must choose a Slavic language; doctoral students of Slavic Studies must choose a Germanic language. Czech students of German studies can choose to study Italian.
 
Study plan for the second year of study
In the second year, PhD students will leave for the partner university. Students enrolled in Prague university will be staying in Rome in the Winter semester of their second year, and students from Rome university will be staying in Prague in the Summer semester. Further mobility will be spent at other institutions according to the specialization of the student.
At the end of the Summer term stay in their second year, Italian students will take the final state examination in Prague, based on the assessment of chapter from the PhD thesis and on the related methodological issues.
 
Study plan for the third year of study
Seminars and specialized conferences which enhance knowledge and skills: PhD students attend lectures and  conferences both in relation to the topic of their dissertation and in terms of broader professional relations.
Education and research activities will be independently chosen by the students, who will carry on activities aimed at completing the PhD thesis.
At the end of the second semester of the third year of study, PhD students will organize/attend a conference open to the academic community, presenting the results of their research.           
 
Doctoral thesis defence
The defence of the thesis consists of a discussion held before an Examination Committee at the home university. The successful defence of the thesis represents for both partner universities the graduation from both study programmes, upon which the PhD diplomas may be issued.
