Gastromusicology: music and food from Italian opera to Cuban folk song

Pierpaolo Polzonetti (University of California at Davis) Meetings "New Frontiers of Musicological Research" Mercoledì 12 giugno, ore 15, Aula Nino Pirrotta

12/06/2024

This seminar explores the intersection of music and gastronomy in two very different contexts: Italian opera and Cuban popular music. The seminar will discuss exemplary cases in which music and the consumption of food or drink merge in rituals and social contexts of listening, focusing especially on the presence of gastronomic signs in the texts of two distant genres of sung music: opera and Cuban popular music. In this way, the seminar invites reflection on the importance of the intersection of gastronomy and corporality in music, but also on the need to diversify approaches and methods of research and interpretation.
