Educational goals and objectives

STRUCTURAL AND GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
The three-year Doctoral Program in Structural and Geotechnical Engineering is the third level of the Italian University education system. It guarantees education in scientific research and provides necessary skills to carry out research activities, also at international level, and professional activities of high qualification, with particular reference to topics related to the Solid Mechanics, Structural Mechanics, foundations and soils included. Topics of interest are related to fundamental and advanced researches on: constitutive aspects of traditional (masonry) and “innovative” materials (composites, nano-composites, bio-); structural dynamics; structural stability; geomechanics; applied research in the structural and geotechnical sectors with reference to soil protection, conservation and preservation of the historical heritage from seismic hazards, structural adaptation and energy saving. In particular, this Doctorate Program consists of topics typical of Structural Mechanics, Structural Engineering, Geotechnics that are relevant in Civil Engineering and Architecture. The themes may have wider declines to other sectors such as Industrial Engineering (e.g. mechanical, aerospace, naval) or the Mathematical Physics, being always characterized by the attention to the theoretical, experimental, computational and applicative aspects. In addition, research topics include conservation and preservation of architectural heritage, safety in extreme events such as fires and explosions, unconventional mechanics issues, frontier technologies, biologically inspired or behavior-based technologies, biostructural issues, heuristic optimization methods, security concerns, energy harvesting, sustainability aspects, forensic engineering, aspects of the history of structural mechanics, and design methodologies. The Doctoral Program in Structural Engineering and Geotechnics is developed in two curricula: a) Structural Engineering and Mechanics b) Geotechnical Engineering The thesis works are centered on themes related to the two curricula and interdisciplinary studies are also encouraged, also in collaboration with other Institutions (Universities, public and private Authorities), always characterized by rigorous and adequate detailed studies. Moreover, thesis works considering transversal themes, that can direct future Doctors not only in academic and research fields, but also towards high-level consulting qualified professional paths (e.g. Infrastructure, Transport, Cultural Heritage, Environment, Industry), are also favored.

Admission Procedure

Qualifications assessment Concerning the qualifications, the following criteria will be considered: final mark of the master degree (the average of marks of passed exams for graduands) and the marks obtained in the relevant exams for the two curricular disciplines;curriculum and motivation to undertake the PhD course; publications, abroad experience, reference letter (max 2); acknowledgements/awards.

Oral interview The oral exam, following the one based on qualifications, will concern:
i) a discussion on the qualifications presented; the study and research interests of the candidate, also through the discussion of the master's degree thesis. The use of presentations in digital format is permitted.
ii) a verification of the basic knowledge of the disciplines Science and Technology of Construction or Geotechnics (depending on the curriculum selected by the candidate).
This verification may also take place by making use of oral and/or written exposure.
The candidate may be asked to integrate the oral discussion, with writings, graphs, formulas and synopsis schemes.
Knowledge of the English language and, for foreign candidates, basic knowledge of the Italian language will also be verified for all candidates.

The minimum positive overall score for the phd admission is 60/100.
