Educational goals and objectives

TRANSLATION INNOVATION IN MEDICINE AND SURGERY
The PhD program in Translational Innovation in Medicine and Surgery trains professionals capable of integrating clinical knowledge with advanced technologies. It offers an interdisciplinary environment where medical, surgical, radiological, gastroenterological, and pathological skills converge, supported by artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and robotics.
A key focus is the study of minimally invasive surgical techniques, particularly robotic surgery, using two Intuitive Xi systems. These tools enable highly precise interventions in oncology, endocrine, thoracic, and gynecological surgery. Integration with AI and augmented reality supports the creation of simulators and the development of patentable innovations, enhancing safety and clinical effectiveness.
The program promotes a multidisciplinary approach to managing complex conditions such as cancer and endometriosis. It fosters collaboration with companies in the field to develop new techniques and scientific solutions. A significant research area is the study of digestive diseases, such as precancerous gastric lesions and neuroendocrine tumors. At the ENETS Center of Excellence at Sant’Andrea University Hospital, PhD students explore advanced methods: from electronic chromoendoscopy to real-time AI-assisted polyp classification, and advanced endoscopic resection and endoscopic ultrasound.
In Radiology, AI improves workflows and diagnostic exams. Tools like Radiology Command Center™, AIR™ Recon DL, and TrueFidelity™ reduce acquisition times and radiation dose while maintaining high image quality. Spectral CT enables identification of tissue composition and supports earlier diagnosis. This is complemented by advanced imaging (SPECT/CT, PET/CT) and radiolabeled probes for inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic conditions.
In Pathology, the program focuses on solid tumors and lymphoproliferative diseases through liquid biopsy, molecular profiling, and organoid development. The labs at Sant’Andrea and the University, equipped with cutting-edge technologies, offer tools for next-generation sequencing (NGS) and cell cultures.
PhD students take part in national and international multicenter projects, work with experts, and contribute to the development of new therapies and diagnostic tools. Access to surgical robots, AI, and advanced imaging systems makes this PhD an ideal setting for innovation, publications, and patents. Graduates will help lead the transition toward more personalized, precise, and minimally invasive medicine.
