Educational goals and objectives

AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ENGINEERING
The Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering represents the highest level of undergraduate training in aerospace at Sapienza.
The Ph.D. course aims to train the skills necessary to carry out highly qualified research activities in the aerospace field. It is a course aimed at the best graduates in the fields of aeronautical and space engineering, but candidates holding a master's or master's degree in the fields of engineering and science (or degrees equivalent to them or degrees obtained abroad and recognized as suitable) may be admitted.
The educational path of the doctoral course involves original research work to be completed over three years.
This course involves an initial phase of completion of the candidate's technical-scientific preparation acquired in the degree courses followed, then the performance of the research activity carried out by the candidate under the guidance of one of the lecturers of the doctoral course, and finally the elaboration of the thesis.
The objective of the course is to train PhDs who can successfully enter the field of research and development of innovative solutions typical of industrial sectors, such as aeronautics and space, which have always required frontier technology.
The pure and applied research characteristics of the aerospace industry have meant that over the years a strong link has been established between important national and international companies and institutions, especially with those based in Lazio. As part of this collaboration, several scholarships have been funded by prominent institutions and companies in the sector.
The main areas in which research is carried out by faculty and students of the doctoral course are:
- Aeroelasticity, dynamics and control of aerospace structures
- Combustion, efficiency and emission control in aircraft thrusters
- Dynamics and control of helicopters
- Numerical and experimental fluid dynamics
- Mechanics of aeronautical and space flight
- Space missions
- Design of space launchers for access to space
- Design and testing of innovative materials and structures
- Aeronautical and space propulsion
- Turbomachinery for aeronautical and space applications
The international characterization of the field's research projects consequently makes the doctoral course linked to universities, research organizations and foreign agencies such as: European Space Agency, Italian Space Agency, Von Karman Institute, ONERA, DLR, CIRA, Georgia Institute of Technology, Purdue University, Carleton University, Los Alamos National Laboratory, NASA Langley, Combustion Research Facility/SANDIA National Laboratory, University of Notre Dame, CCRC/KAUST, University of Illinois, Princeton University.
