More information

The courses listed as examples belong to three types:
  • doctoral specialization courses of 2 credits jointly provided by the Doctorate in Computer Engineering at Sapienza and the Doctorate in Management at Luiss;
  • a summer school in cybersecurity to be held in spring/summer at the DIAG-Sapienza (the first edition was held in 2019)
  • courses of 4-9 credits provided at the LM in Engineering in Computer Science and the LM in Cybersecurity at Sapienza.

Seminar activities will instead be defined contextually during the first year of the doctorate.

1st-year doctoral students carry out the following activities:
  • attend doctoral specialization courses; the courses are designed to provide state-of-the-art tools that can be applied directly in the research carried out by the students;
  • deepen the specific themes related to research areas of interest through participation in international schools for doctorates, including those organized at the DIAG and at the School of Law at Luiss;
  • attend official teachings of the Master's Degrees of the Faculty of Engineering of Information, Computer Science and Statistics, the Master's Degree in Data Science and Management at Luiss and the Master's Degrees related to the fields of application of Cybersecurity, with the aim of complementing, deepening and integrating knowledge of their training path;
  • participate in seminars of Italian and foreign scholars organized by the doctorate or seminars organized by the departments of the teachers participating in the College of Teachers that are incorporated into the training offer of the doctorate;

The student will be required to carry out the training activities for a total of 30 credits, of which up to 12 credits for official master's degree courses, up to 18 credits for doctoral specialization courses and international schools also provided by other universities and research centers, and up to 12 credits for seminar activities; the division of credits between the three types of activities may be modified by the college to take into account the specific training needs of the doctoral student. At least 22 of the 30 credits must be completed during the first year. All credits related to master's degree courses must be completed during the first year. The plan of training activities must be presented by the student within the first 6 months of the first year, and is subject to evaluation and approval by the college.

Method of choosing the subject of the thesis

The choice of the research field in which to develop the thesis is carried out through the comparison and discussion of students with the members of the Faculty Board and through the deepening of research themes presented within the specialized doctoral courses, seminars, and international doctoral schools. During the first six months of the first year and in any case no later than the first year of the course, the student will have to identify among the members of the Faculty Board a reference teacher for the thesis. At the end of the 1st year, the Faculty Board formally appoints a supervisor chosen among its members, possibly assisted by a co-tutor external to the doctoral college.

Admission to the second year

The verification is carried out:
  1. of attendance of doctoral courses and chosen teachings by the doctoral student, and of passing the relevant evaluation exams;
  2. of the carrying out of general and targeted study activities and attendance of seminars included in the Doctorate's teaching activities.
  3. of the identification of the research field in which the doctoral thesis will be developed.
All the required training activities for the 1st year must be completed by the student within the first year of the course. 15 days before the end of the first year of the course, the doctoral student must submit a report on the activities carried out, based on which the College expresses a merit judgment and grants (or not) admission to the next year.
