Research: The 'Winstedt fragment' in the sixth satire of Juvenal. Introduction, translation and commentary

My name is Alessandra D'Antonio and I am currently a PhD student at Sapienza University in Philology and History Of The Ancient World, curriculum of Classical Philology (XXXIX cycle). I obtained both my Bachelor's (2020) and my Master's degree (2023) in Classics at the University of Pisa, with a score of 110/ 110 cum laude. At the same time, during my five years at university (2017-2022), I attended the Scuola Normale Superiore, where I graduated in Philology and History of Antiquity with a mark of 100/ 100 cum laude. My main interests are in Latin philology and palaeography, as well as in the history of the manuscript tradition. My PhD research aims at providing a complete commentary from a philological point of view of the 'Winstedt fragment', i.e. the 36 verses in the sixth satire of Juvenal, which are still known only through the ms Oxford, Bodleian Library, Canonic. Class. Lat. 41 (O). Since its discovery in 1899, the question of its authenticity has arisen among philologists, and yet conclusive arguments are still lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to unravel all the exegetical and textual problems contained in these 36 verses, in order to reach as comprehensive an overview of the fragment as possible, especially in relation to its potential Juvenalian authorship.
