Educational goals and objectives

ADVANCED SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIES
The PhD Programme in “Advanced Technologies in Surgery” aims to provide graduates in Medicine and Surgery with a solid scientific and technological background in the main fields of surgery, including general surgery, digestive and vascular surgery, urology, and head and neck diseases. The programme is oriented toward the production of scientific publications and other research outputs.
The programme is structured into three curricula:
- Curriculum A: Advanced Technologies in Surgery;
- Curriculum B: Head and Neck Diseases and Biocompatibility;
- Curriculum C: Surgery.
The main academic disciplines include General Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, and Urology.
Admission is based on a public competitive examination and is open to candidates holding a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Medicine and Surgery, or an equivalent foreign qualification recognized for admission purposes. In accordance with current regulations, simultaneous enrolment in a PhD programme and a residency programme is permitted.
The programme aims to train surgeon-scientists capable of independently designing, conducting, and completing research activities. The theoretical training initially focuses on clinical research methodologies, including statistical analysis, and subsequently on pathophysiological knowledge, with particular emphasis on neoplastic diseases and the effects of surgical interventions. Additional topics include basic research, molecular genetics, immunological and neuroendocrine mechanisms, innovative therapeutic strategies, and minimally invasive techniques.
Practical training involves participation in laboratory activities, clinical wards, and operating rooms under supervision. The Faculty Board, with multidisciplinary expertise, promotes national and international collaborations and offers opportunities for research periods abroad. The integration of clinical and research activities ensures the achievement of training objectives in both experimental and clinical fields.
Over the three-year programme, PhD candidates acquire:
1. a solid scientific background;
2. theoretical and practical skills in diagnostic and therapeutic methodologies;
3. the ability to develop research projects independently.

A) Advanced Technologies in Surgery
B) Head and Neck Pathology and Biocompatibility
C) Surgery
The Research Project will be written in Italian and structured as follows:
a) Project Title (maximum 100 characters - excluding spaces)
b) Research Objectives (maximum 900 characters - excluding spaces).
• Overall Objective/Goal: The broad, long-term goal related to the resolution of a general problem, often of a multidisciplinary nature;
• Specific Objective: The concrete result that the candidate commits to achieving within the three years of the PhD program. The specific objective:
- must contribute to the achievement of the overall objective; it may be broken down into sub-objectives;
- should preferably be formulated as a goal (noun) and not as an action (verb);
- must meet SMART criteria (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound).
This section does not need to describe the expected results of the various phases of the research.
c) State of the art and essential bibliography (max 3,000 characters - excluding spaces). It must highlight:
• knowledge of the relevant scientific context;
• identification of one or more open problems;
• the consistency between these critical issues and the specific objective of the project.
d) Description of research activities (max 4,000 characters - excluding spaces). Brief description of the activities planned over the 3 years, indicating the methodologies, tools, and operational phases of the project.
e) Timeline (max 1,000 characters - excluding spaces): the activities planned over the 3 years (e.g., recruitment, data collection and analysis, processing and writing of the thesis).
