Educational goals and objectives

Bioinformatics and Computational biology
The PhD programme in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology is designed as a unified and coherent framework for the training of researchers and professionals capable of operating across the various domains of these disciplines. Graduates of the programme will be equipped to carry out independent research in specific fields and at the highest levels of public and private research, both in Italy and abroad, engaging productively and synergistically with experimental research groups.

Thanks to its strongly interdisciplinary nature, the programme is open to candidates holding a Master’s degree (or equivalent), from Italy or abroad, in disciplines from either the biological-medical area or from technological and quantitative fields. It is aimed at those wishing to pursue a scientific and professional career in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology.

With a training programme designed for diverse academic backgrounds, the PhD course offers students from biological and medical sciences the opportunity to develop solid computational skills, while providing students from quantitative and technological backgrounds with the chance to deepen their knowledge in molecular, structural, and systems biology. All students will thus acquire the necessary foundation to carry out independent research in the field of bioinformatics.

The exponential growth of genomic and proteomic data, driven by the advancement of sequencing technologies and the structural analysis of biological macromolecules, represents both a challenge and a tremendous opportunity for progress across many scientific areas, including medicine. The complex information embedded in these data—especially when integrated with experimental data—holds the key to understanding the intricacies of biological systems and to developing applications that range from industrial, environmental, and biotechnological contexts to clinical ones, with significant potential for advancing therapeutic strategies for complex diseases.

The wide variety of laboratories involved in the programme ensures that personalised learning paths can be tailored to the aspirations and backgrounds of each doctoral candidate. The collaborative structure of the PhD programme and the multidisciplinary composition of the faculty provide a broad range of scientific specialisations, allowing each student to pursue a research path that best aligns with their interests.

The main research areas include:
- Genomics
- Transcriptomics
- Analysis of protein–protein interaction networks in prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems
- Simulation of biological systems
- Drug design and virtual screening
- Machine learning and data mining
- Integration of omics data for biomedicine
- Research software development
- Chemoinformatics
