Educational goals and objectives

DOCUMENTATION, GEOGRAPHIC, LINGUISTICS AND LITERATURE STUDIES
Language, representations, texts and documents in all their implications and aspects (cartographical, linguistic, philological, material, etc.) are the common denominator of the PhD program. The program includes specific curricula covering library, archive and documentation studies, studies of language theory and linguistic education (including English, Spanish and German linguistics), Russian linguistics and culture, historical and philological literary studies, cartography and geography studies, gender studies. The PhD program aims to provide graduate students with in-depth and up-to-date knowledge on the major issues related to language and documents (written as well as audiovisual and digital) and regarding mapping and critical representations of material and immaterial heritage and is characterized by the attention to interdisciplinarity, to the most innovative areas of research in the various fields and to internationalization. The PhD program is recognized as a leader program in various fields and involved in international cooperation, as shown by the provenance of applications from several Italian universities and from many other countries, as well as from qualified public servants.
The curricula of the PhD program are: 1) Library, Archive and Documentation Studies; 2) Theory of Language and Linguistic Education; 3) Russian Linguistics and Culture; 4) Geographical Studies; 5) Gender Studies: literatures and representations.

Admission Procedure

Qualifications assessment The selection will be based on the research project and qualifications and therefore, for those admitted, an oral exam.
Evaluation of qualifications: A) research project, up to 25 points; B) curriculum, qualifications, language skills and other qualifications, up to 10 points; C) any scientific publications (maximum 5), up to 5 points.
To be admitted to the oral exam, an overall score of at least 26/40 is required.

Oral interview The oral exam, in Italian (and, for the curriculum of Russian Linguistics and Culture, also in Russian), is aimed at ascertaining the candidate's preparation, skills and aptitudes for research in the scientific areas of the chosen Curriculum and with specific reference to the proposed research project. Criteria of the Research Project
The research project, with a maximum length of 25,000 characters including spaces (but excluding the bibliography), should specify the following points:
1) Objectives and purposes;
2) State of the art;
3) Methodology and tools;
4) Program (with time frame and possible collaborations with national and international research institutes);
5) Expected results;
6) Bibliographical references.

The evaluation criteria are:
1) relevance to the Ph.D. subject areas;
2) importance and originality of the expected results;
3) mastery of disciplinary and methodological competences relevant to the research;
4) information about the state of knowledge regarding the research topic and the most relevant literature;
5) clarity and effectiveness in the presentation of the objectives and in the indication of the
approach and the steps of the research;
6) feasibility of the project, congruence between objectives, skills, tools and time available;
7) new elements of the research project with respect to the subject of the master thesis (or
equivalent).
