Educational goals and objectives

ELECTRICAL, MATERIALS AND NANOTECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING
The PhD Course in Electrical, Materials and Nanotechnology Engineering is established with the scope of creating a truly multidisciplinary third education level, targeted at the study of research topics in the following engineering sectors:
- electrical engineering, with particular emphasis on renewable electric energy sources, risks associated with conducted or radiated electromagnetic interference, electrical machines and drives, power electronics, electric vehicles, sustainable electric mobility, sensing technologies, soft robotics with electrostatic-electrofluidic actuation, electromagnetic compatibility, environmental electromagnetic impact, and techniques and methodologies for electrical and electromagnetic measurements;
- engineering of raw materials for the study and enhancement of primary and secondary raw materials, development and application of advanced technologies for material recycling, promoting the sustainable use of resources and the principles of the circular economy;
- materials engineering for applications, technologies, and industrial production processes in mass production sectors such as automotive, railways, construction, marine, aerospace, and space, with particular attention to eco-sustainable and circular processes and materials. Another field of focus is cultural heritage, with particular reference to the diagnostics and preservation of cultural assets, including artistic and architectural material heritage;
- engineering of micro- and nano-scale technologies for the development and characterization of new materials, devices, and multifunctional components for industrial applications.
The Doctorate addresses the training needs of high-tech companies operating in various industrial sectors and in electrical engineering. The training intended for doctoral candidates focuses on initiating them into applied research and technological development, starting from the integration of fundamental topics to the new frontiers of science in the specific field of research, identified in agreement with the Tutor assigned to each candidate. The Doctoral program is organized into three educational curricula: Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering and Raw Materials, and Nanotechnology Engineering.

Admission Procedure

Qualifications assessment The Selection Board will evaluate the qualifications and documents submitted by the applicants, in accordance with the list provided below. A maximum score of 20 will be given for the qualification of the curriculum vitae, up to 25 for the research program and up to 5 for the motivation letter. The minimum score required to be admitted to the oral exam is 30/50.

Oral interview The interview assesses the abilities and skills of the candidate and his/her research attitude towards to the topics of the Ph.D. program. The following aspects will be addressed: qualifications of the candidate, motivations for pursuing this Ph.D. program, research, and knowledge of the English language. The oral exam is passed if the candidate reaches at least 30/50 points. Only the candidates who will score a minimum of 60/100 are eligible for admission to the Ph.D. program.

Progetto di ricerca
Research project

Il candidato dovrà presentare un progetto (formato pdf, minimo 4.000, massimo 8.000 caratteri spazi inclusi, escluse bibliografia e figure) relativo alle tematiche di ricerca del curriculum selezionato (A, B, C) che possa far valutare la sua propensione alla ricerca e la sua capacità di progettare e organizzare in autonomia le diverse fasi del lavoro. Si precisa che il progetto di ricerca proposto non rappresenta necessariamente quello da svilupparsi nel corso del dottorato. In caso di ammissione, il progetto di ricerca che si andrà eTettivamente a svolgere verrà successivamente definito ed approvato dal Collegio dei Docenti del Dottorato. In particolare, verranno valutati: - Pertinenza del progetto con gli obiettivi formativi del dottorato (max 10 punti) - Conoscenza dello stato dell’arte, originalità e contenuto innovativo (max 10 punti) - Chiarezza e qualità degli obiettivi proposti, delle metodologie e dei risultati attesi (max 5 punti)
The applicant must provide a research project proposal (pdf format, minimum 4,000, maximum 8,000 characters, including spaces, and excluding references and figures), related to the research topics of the PhD programme (curriculum A, B, C) aimed at showing his/her attitudes toward research and toward planning and organization of the sequential steps of research activities. Please note that the proposed research project attached to the application is not necessarily the project that will be carried out during the PhD programme. If admitted, the research project that will be actually carried out will be subsequently defined and approved by the PhD Academic Board after the start of the PhD programme. In particular, the evaluation will be related to: - Relevance of the proposed project with respect to the objectives of the PhD programme (max 10 points) - Knowledge of the state-of-the-art, originality and innovative aspects (max 10 points) - Clarity and quality of the proposed objectives, methodologies and expected results (max 5 points)

La lettera di motivazione (file pdf, massimo 3.000 caratteri spazi inclusi) è finalizzata ad evidenziare l'interesse nei confronti del Dottorato di Ricerca in Ingegneria Elettrica, dei Materiali e delle Nanotecnologie con particolare riferimento al curriculum scelto (A, B, C).
The motivation letter (pdf format, maximum 3,000 characters including spaces) represents a short statement explaining the reasons for the interest in the PhD in Electrical, Materials and Nanotechnology Engineering with particular reference to the selected curriculum (A, B, C).

Alla prova orale vengono ammessi i candidati che nel complesso della valutazione dei titoli, del progetto di ricerca e della lettera di motivazione abbiano conseguito la votazione di almeno 30/50. La prova orale ha lo scopo di valutare le conoscenze e le competenze del candidato e la sua attitudine alla ricerca nei settori scientifici di interesse del Dottorato. In particolare, durante la prova orale la Commissione approfondirà i seguenti aspetti: qualificazione del candidato, motivazioni a seguire il corso di dottorato, progetto di ricerca presentato dal candidato e conoscenza della lingua inglese. La prova orale potrà essere svolta anche in videoconferenza: la richiesta di adozione di questa modalità deve essere presentata contestualmente alla domanda e comunque non oltre il termine di 15 giorni prima della prova orale. La prova orale si intende superata se il candidato ha ottenuto la votazione minima di 30/50. Il punteggio minimo complessivo per l’ammissione al Dottorato di Ricerca è di 60/100.
Only candidates who will collect at least 30/50 points throughout the assessment of titles, motivational letter and research project, will be admitted to the oral exam. The oral exam aims to assess the background of expertise and skills of the candidate and his/her research attitude with reference to the topics of the PhD programme. In particular, the following aspects will be addressed by the Selection Board: qualification of the candidate, motivations for pursuing the specific PhD programme, research project submitted by the applicant and knowledge of English language. The interview can be conducted also remotely, to allow applicants living abroad to take part in the admission process: the request must be presented at the application stage and in any case no later than 15 days before the date of the interview. The oral exam is successful if the candidate reaches at least 30/50 points. Only those candidates who will collect a minimum score of 60/100 are eligible for the admission to the PhD programme.
