Educational goals and objectives

CHEMICAL SCIENCES
The purposes of this Doctorate course are many-fold and are directed toward the development of a proper and autonomous scientific capacity in all chemical fields for doctorate students. They will learn how to proceed in a given research line and to solve the problems using original and self consistent ways. Obviously, they will learn how to choose advanced ad hoc experimental techniques or theoretical approaches. Plans are to form self-conscious researchers, able to develop chemical sciences in both industrial and academic environments. In a three-year course the candidates shall operate, under a project co-ordinator, in such a way to develop a significant scientific activity on items suggested by the candidates themselves. In the project they will define in due terms the expected results and the innovative contributions to former knowledge in the field. The results will be collected and discussed in the doctorate thesis. It is recommended that Ph.D. work shall be developed, at least six months, into international laboratories. This will allow the candidates to compare his/her level and capacity into an international context and to increase his/her expertise and self-consciousness. A well balanced development of Ph.D. curricula represents the most important part of the research projects. The Ph.D. candidates, anyhow, will follow advanced courses (12 credits in the three years) to improve their preparation in the field(s) pertinent to their thesis work. The related programs for each of the above items may change from year to year, depending on the projects presented by the Ph.D. Students. Each of them will prepare and discuss a project, in collaboration with his/her Supervisor and the Ph.D. Coordinator and will submit to the PhD Council for approval. In addition to teaching activities to be followed in the Chemistry Department, or in Sapienza University, Doctorate Students will follow national and international courses on the items of pertinence to their thesis work or will follow seminars and lectures hold by eminent scientists. It is also possible for them to support teaching activities held in the department, according to the suggestions raised by the Ph.D. Council.

Admission Procedure

Qualifications assessment Evaluation of laurea degrees (max 20 points) and of a research project (max 10 points), written test (max 40 points), oral test (max 30 points).
The evaluation of laurea degrees will be done according to the attached tables.
- first level laurea final mark: max 12 points.
- average of marks for exams of second level laurea degree: max 8 points.
- minimum score for the admission to the evaluation of the research project: 10 points.
- maximum score: 20 points.

Research Project The candidate must submit a research project, possibly inspired by his thesis work, that has to be contained in a size between 5,000 and 8,000 characters (including spaces). The research project is relevant for the sole purpose of the selection and the choice of the doctoral thesis is not binding.
In order to be admitted to the written test, the candidate must obtain a minimum score of 5 points.

Written examination The candidate must develop a topic chosen from the 10 tracks proposed and concisely answer 3 questions chosen from 5 proposed. Both the tracks and the questions will focus on topics related to the five disciplinary sectors of chemistry: Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, General and Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry (disciplinary sectors 03 / A1, 03 / A2, 03 / B1, 03 / C1, 03 / C2) covered in the courses of the Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry. Three envelopes will be prepared, each containing 10 tracks and 5 questions belonging to the five sectors defined above (two themes and one question for each sector 03 / A1, 03 / A2, 03 / B1, 03 / C1, 03 / C2). One of the three envelopes will be pulled out. Each candidate will have to carry out one of the themes extracted and answer 3 questions. In order to be admitted to the oral exam, the candidate must achieve a minimum overall score of 20 points.
- minimum score for admission to the oral exam: 20 points
