Research: Invisible links: how the metabolic and hormonal profile, metabolomic composition, platelet activation and procoagulant state influence liver fibrosis in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated liver disease (MASLD)

Education and Training: Dr. Tania D’Amico obtained her Degree in Medicine and Surgery from Sapienza University of Rome with a final grade of 110/110, defending a thesis entitled “Adult Growth Hormone Deficiency: Metabolic Aspects and Evaluation through Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)”. She subsequently obtained her medical license to practice and is registered with the Order of Physicians of Rome and Province. From January 2020 to January 2021, she attended the Second-Level Master’s Degree in Diagnosis and Treatment of Hypothalamic–Pituitary Disorders at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome, discussing a thesis entitled “Adult Growth Hormone Deficiency and Skeletal Fragility Indices: Comparison of Two Diagnostic Methods.” On February 3rd, 2026, she completed her Specialization in Internal Medicine at Sapienza University of Rome with honors (70/70 cum laude), presenting a thesis entitled “A Potential Age-Independent MASLD-Related Liver Fibrosis Index Based on Metabolomic Profiling of a Cohort of Patients with MASLD.” She is currently a third-year PhD candidate in Endocrinological Sciences (39th cycle) at Sapienza University of Rome. Work Experience: During her training, Dr. D’Amico has developed significant clinical and research experience in internal medicine, endocrinology, and cardiovascular medicine, with particular interest in metabolic medicine and sex and gender medicine. During her residency in Internal Medicine, she actively participated in the clinical management of patients with complex internal medicine conditions, with particular focus on metabolic, hepatic, and cardiovascular diseases. In parallel, she carried out clinical research activities within observational studies and multicenter clinical trials, collaborating with national research groups investigating thrombo-inflammatory mechanisms and sex- and gender-related differences in cardiovascular diseases. Since 2023, she has been a PhD candidate, conducting research in the field of metabolic and cardiovascular pathophysiology and participating in precision medicine projects integrating clinical data, metabolomics, and inflammatory biomarkers. Specific Skills: Dr. D’Amico has developed clinical and scientific expertise in internal medicine, metabolic endocrinology, and translational clinical research. She has experience in the management of clinical databases and the analysis of metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers, as well as in the conduct of clinical studies according to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards. She possesses solid digital and data management skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office tools and scientific data presentation. Regarding language skills, she has B2-level proficiency in English and advanced proficiency in French (C1–C2 level), enabling effective participation in international scientific environments. She regularly participates in national and international scientific congresses, including as a speaker and discussant. Research Activity: The research activity planned within her PhD project focuses on the interactions between metabolism, the endocrine system, and platelet function in the context of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, with particular attention to sex and gender differences. The project aims to integrate metabolomic analyses, inflammatory biomarkers, and platelet activation parameters to identify novel biological profiles associated with cardiovascular risk and progression of MASLD (Metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease). Specifically, the research involves the analysis of clinical cohorts characterized by metabolomic profiling obtained through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques, and the evaluation of associations between circulating metabolites, hormonal status, and platelet phenotype. The ultimate goal is to develop novel integrated indices of metabolic and hepatic risk and to contribute to the understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms linking metabolism, inflammation, and thrombosis. Mobility: During her training, Dr. D’Amico has participated in scientific collaborations and conference activities in national and international contexts, contributing to the dissemination of research findings in the fields of metabolic and endocrine medicine. Patents / Clinical Trials: Dr. D’Amico has been involved in the conduct of clinical trials and observational studies performed according to Good Clinical Practice (GCP), collaborating with research groups investigating cardiovascular and metabolic biomarkers and innovative therapeutic strategies in internal medicine. Publications and Abstracts: Dr. D’Amico is author and co-author of several peer-reviewed publications in international scientific journals, mainly in the fields of endocrinology, metabolic medicine, and cardiovascular diseases. Her recent scientific contributions include studies on: platelet activation and physiological variations during the menstrual cycle; sex differences in cardiovascular diseases; metabolomics and metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD); the prognostic role of inflammatory biomarkers in liver cirrhosis; clinical studies on the Mediterranean diet and cardiovascular prevention. Her scientific production includes articles published in international journals such as Communications Medicine, Internal and Emergency Medicine, Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Nutrients, Journal of Endocrinological Investigation, among others.
