Gli interessi di ricerca di Sonia Massai si concentrano su: Shakespeare e early modern drama; editing e storia del libro (con particolare attenzione alla trasmissione di Shakespeare e di altri drammaturghi dal manoscritto alla stampa, attraverso la quale Shakespeare e i suoi contemporanei sono stati rappresentati alle successive generazioni di lettori); performance e storia del teatro (con particolare attenzione alla ricezione di Shakespeare sul palcoscenico inglese e alle appropriazioni di Shakespeare attraverso diversi media, lingue e culture). È stata nominata General Editor delle Cambridge Shakespeare Editions, una nuova serie di edizioni critiche delle Opere complete di Shakespeare in edizioni a testo unico (in uscita nel 2026-2031).
