Titolo della tesi: Additive Manufacturing Innovations in Process Monitoring and Design

The progression of Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies has instigated a transformative shift in contemporary engineering, presenting remarkable prospects for innovation and design adaptability. This doctoral thesis delves into the diverse domain of additive manufacturing, with a specific focus on Selective Laser Melting (SLM) incorporating in-situ monitoring, Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) employing Topology Optimization (TO) and lattice structures, and the dynamic frontier of 4D printing utilizing shape memory materials. As various industries increasingly embrace the capabilities of AM, the imperative for real-time monitoring during the fabrication process becomes pronounced. The utilization of in-situ monitoring in SLM stands as a foundational element in ensuring precision, quality control, and the optimization of critical parameters. This process enhancement is instrumental in strengthening the reliability and reproducibility of AM. The significance of Design for Additive Manufacturing becomes evident in maximizing the inherent potential of AM technologies. Through inventive methodologies such as Topology Optimization and lattice structures, this research delves into approaches that not only enhance the structural efficiency of printed components but also contribute to the overall improvement of design flexibility and performance. 4D printing, distinguished by the dynamic evolution of printed structures over time, extends the boundaries of additive manufacturing. This thesis examines the incorporation of shape memory materials in 4D printing, with the objective of crafting adaptive structures responsive to external stimuli. This exploration opens new avenues for applications in diverse fields, ranging from robotics to biomedical engineering. The synthesis of in-situ monitoring, advanced design strategies, and dynamic 4D printing capabilities within this research aims to enrich the ongoing dialogue on additive manufacturing. By exploring the interconnected facets of these technologies, this work not only addresses current challenges in the field but also propels the trajectory of AM technologies towards unprecedented levels of sophistication and relevance across various industries.
