Teaching Foundations and earth retaining structures (12 ECTS) – Master of Science (Laurea Magistrale) in Civil Engineering and Deep excavations and tunnelling in urban environment (6 ECTS) - Master od Science (Laurea Magistrale) in Civil Engineering

Research activity
The research activity, also performed in cooperation with colleagues from national and international universities, was addressed to the following research topics:
• Analysis of deep open excavations and prediction of the induced displacement field
• Analysis of deep open excavations modelling the installation effects of diaphragm walls
• Study of the interaction between tunnelling or deep excavations and massive historical buildings
• Evaluation of compensation grouting efficiency through laboratory tests on large samples
• Mitigation of tunnel-induced displacements via diaphragm walls
• Mitigation of displacements induced by deep open excavations using: pre-installed piles at dredge line; pre-installed soil improvement in front of the wall; sacrificial cross-walls or buttress-walls pre-installed inside the excavation area
• Seismic behaviour and performance-based design of massive caisson foundations of bridge piers
• Seismic behaviour and performance-based design of reinforced-earth retaining structures
• Seismic behaviour and performance-based design of foundation systems of suspended bridges
• Capacity design of retaining structures and bridge abutments founded on piles
• Evaluation of seismic stability and performance of slopes and earth dams
• Back-analysis of instrumented full-scale structures such as deep open excavations, tunnels, piled foundations and oil tanks founded on stabilised columns
• Slope stabilisation using gravity trench drains or sub-horizontal tubular drains
• Characterisation and engineering properties of natural fine-grained deposits and related geotechnical problems
• Experimental behaviour of stiff and overconsolidated clays: effects of weathering and swelling on the shear strength and compressibility parameters; measurement of small-strain stiffness and evaluation of its dependence on stress state and history with reference to soil-structure interaction under static and seismic conditions; influence of microstructure on the mechanical behaviour of natural clays with reference to constitutive modelling of soil behaviour
