Research: An OMR system for Trouvères manuscripts notation

Curriculum: History and Analysis of Musical Cultures

The project will investigate the semiography of square notation in Trouvères manuscripts through the construction of an Optical Music Recognition system to read and encode it. The design of the system, will start from the musicological side with the analysis and classification of the notation signs and the mapping of their functions and graphical variants. These data are going to build the ground truth, the series of annotated examples on which the machine will carry out its learning process. Once trained, the system will be able to encode digitized manuscripts in this notation, allowing large-scale searches to be carried out in the repertoire and verifying semiographic and philological hypotheses with unprecedented precision.
