More information
The Board of Professors pays particular attention to involve and enrich PhD students through interesting initiatives for deepening specific and important issues.
Our PhD programme focuses particularly on building an international and stimulating environment. For this reason, there are dedicated programmes for each academic year with lessons held by Italian and foreign professors specialised in interdisciplinary topics provided by the overall training. These programmes are disclosed both in Italian and English. Introductory courses are refined through a detailed schedule of seminars, conferences, round tables and book presentations to improve doctoral candidates' cultural background. These activities' consists of 80 hours, either in class or distance learning, all published on the official doctoral website and indicated explicitly for each cycle.
Attendance to these courses is mandatory and essential (at least 75% of the total activities). Besides, at the end of each academic year, PhD candidates have to submit part of their research under the tutors' supervision and a report about their academic activities.
Part of the training process is focused on the research methodology, framed in four units of 6 CFU each and organised by levels (from the first to the third academic year). In our PhD programme, there is also an annual course of English academic writing (6 CFU), which can be attended upon verification of the minimum requirements. Those PhD students who are not admitted to this course are required to improve their English: our University offers a great variety of English courses, including training activities provided by English Language Readers.
During the first year, PhD Students will follow a special program about tools and methodologies of research (Research design, 6 ECTS)
Method of choosing the subject of the thesis
During the admission process, the candidate submits a research proposal evaluated by a board of academic experts. If the candidate is admitted to the PhD program, the Board of Professors and the supervisor evaluate the research proposal to carefully assess its compatibility with the PhD student's path and the program of studies planned in the three years. The supervisor is responsible for the planning and monitoring the work program carried out by the candidate during the doctoral cycle, including periods of study abroad.
Admission to the second year
During the three academic years, the PhD student must attend the Doctoral's courses to proceed in its research and, therefore, collect archival and bibliographic material. PhD students must also meet their tutors and the coordinator for the evaluation of the research thesis. Besides, they have to publish at least one essay in agreement with the tutor each year.
