Criteria for the organization of teaching:
- The Doctorate in Documentary, Linguistic and Literary Sciences aims to train its students both in university research and in research institutions, cultural institutions and administrative and private technical services. Also for this reason, a significant share of doctoral students is represented, alongside young scholars who have recently obtained a master's degree, by supernumerary students from the administration (archives, libraries, educational institutions).
- For this reason, the Academic Board has for some time chosen to articulate teaching by integrating advanced institutional-type paths specific to the single curricula and transversal training moments of a seminar type. This training course is the subject of a modular articulation which foresees that in part of the activities the doctoral students of the 3 years participate together, both for obvious practical advantages (e.g. to be able to take advantage of the seminars of illustrious scholars invited during the three years) and for the belief that the contact and comparison between doctoral students who are at different stages of their career contributes in a very significant way to their maturation, both as regards the development of their specific research, and to overcome any difficulties that may arise in the best possible way they often arise in such a demanding journey, even on a personal level. Another part of the planned activities, however, is specific to each year and addressed exclusively to the PhD students of the single year.
- On the other hand, as regards the book and document science curriculum, to which a significant proportion of the students belong, a traditional type of teaching, however advanced, would constitute a duplication of the courses already offered, for the third level of the educational offer, from the School of specialization in archival and book heritage.
- Finally, it may be useful to point out that the individual research selected in the competition phase is mostly research of considerable scope and commitment also on a quantitative level (documentary funds, corpora, etc.), so that it is necessary to limit the days dedicated to activities traditional teaching methods so as not to distract PhD students excessively from their daily work on their research material, which is essential for achieving high-level results.
Method of choosing the subject of the thesis
How to choose the subject of the thesis
Presentation of the project by the PhD student during the competition, and subsequent comparison for the remodulation or redefinition of the project itself with the Board of the curriculum to which it belongs.
Admission to the second year
Admission to the following year
At the end of the first semester, the doctoral student must present a report on the progress of the work, to be completed on the basis of the indications of the Academic Board, following the indications of the tutors and the results of the discussion. The changeover of the year takes place after the PhD student has presented and discussed with the Board a second report on the progress of the project in the first year and on the programs for the following year.
