Research: Giulio Andreotti at the Ministry of Defense (1959–1966) and Italy's International Politics
The project examines Giulio Andreotti's role as Minister of Defense (1959–1966) during Italy's political transition toward the center-left, set within the international context of the Cold War. Drawing on newly accessible national and international archival sources, the research explores the connections between Italian domestic politics and foreign policy, focusing on Andreotti's influence in relations with Atlantic allies and in consolidating political balances within the "inorganic" center-left governments of Fanfani and the "organic" center-left governments of Moro. Particular attention is given to Andreotti's interactions with diplomatic and military circles, especially concerning NATO dynamics and Italian-American relations. The aim is to enhance current historiographical sources by reassessing the Ministry of Defense's contributions within the international political framework and reconstructing the political and personal networks that Andreotti established during his tenure. The research seeks to provide a new perspective on the evolution of Italy’s center-left and the country's role in international politics during the 1960s.
