Research: A24 film distribution in Italy and France: European dynamics of the contemporary art house

PhD curriculum: Studies in theater, performing arts, film, and digital performance technology

Description of the research project: Following the season of great changes in film distribution, this research aims to investigate the recent distribution scenarios of American independent cinema in Italy and France - key countries in the European market - specifically following the case of A24. By looking at the characteristics and development strategies of the American brand, the project aspires to create an updated and systematic study to reason about the transformations of cinema in the broader framework of independent distribution. Through a methodological approach pertaining to media industry studies, the project intends to observe the differences between American and European film distribution through the analysis of business and marketing models, comparison of data, and testimonies of industry professionals, in order to understand the development of relations between A24 and European players and the potential of branding applied to the contemporary arthouse.

Doctoral student resume: Graduated in Modern Literature and Performing Arts from the University of Genoa with a thesis in Film Criticism entitled "Cinema after Postmodernism. Narration, Perception, Reality" with supervisor Prof. Luca Malavasi. The thesis was the product of research conducted between Genoa and Paris during the second year of my master's degree. In the academic and work path I was able to develop a solid knowledge base on the subject. I was able to deepen my understanding of cinema as an industrial art form and as a device capable of responding to the challenges of modernity. I also had the opportunity to put my knowledge into practice by taking part as a screenwriter and assistant in several independent productions, collaborating with filmmakers and professionals in the field. These experiences have allowed me to investigate the entire filmmaking process, from pre-production to post-production, focusing my interest on the evolution of independent film distribution and its transformations in Italy and France.
