Research: Architectural Substance: Public Space as a Place of Ethical Resistance in Contemporary Architecture

**Lavinia Tomasoli** (Rome, 1991) Architect. Ph.D. candidate, 37th cycle, at the Doctoral School in Architecture and Urban Engineering, DICEA - Department of Civil, Building, and Environmental Engineering, Sapienza University of Rome. Her research focuses on Architectural Design (ICAR14) and Architectural Technology (ICAR12), with a strong interdisciplinary approach involving Philosophy and Neuroscience. Her academic work is enriched by participation in international workshops in Italy and abroad, as well as by presenting papers at international architecture conferences. Graduated with honors in Architecture from Sapienza University of Rome [2016], she has been a visiting student at MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston [2018]; FADU - Faculty of Architecture, Design, and Urbanism, University of Buenos Aires [2015]; and the Polytechnic University of Valencia [2012-2013]. Since 2017, she has been a teaching assistant at Sapienza University of Rome and, in 2018, served as a tutor at the Public Policy School, Italiadecide, Sapienza University of Rome, and Luiss Guido Carli, focusing on the theme: "Reconnecting Italy." In 2017, she won an advanced training course titled *"Rome - Copenhagen Urban Challenge - Urban Farming and Gardening in Rome and Copenhagen"* (RORUC) at Copenhagen Business School, Copenhagen, and Sapienza University of Rome. In the same year, she directed a documentary, *"Cuba en la telaraña"*, beginning to use cinema as an expressive medium. She has participated in various international competitions, earning several Special Mentions. She has collaborated with architectural firms in Italy and Portugal and has been working as a freelance professional since 2019. In 2022, she published her first book, *"Diario di bordo"*, recounting her thesis experience in Argentina. In 2023, she secured research start-up funding and participated in an international workshop, *"Moving Boundaries"*, in Venice, aiming to establish the foundation of architectural research through an interdisciplinary approach, bridging the humanities and neuroscience applied to space. That same year, she won a public competition and began working as a Technical Official for the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, focusing on implementing PNRR-funded projects. In 2024, she co-directed a short film that won several national and international awards.
