Thesis title: Advanced joint inversion techniques for electrical and seismic tomography in environmental applications

Geophysical tomographic methods have become increasingly significant for environmental, hydraulic, and civil applications, given their ability to provide fast, non-invasive and high-resolution imaging of the subsurface. Their relevance is further highlighted by European and international regulatory frameworks, promoting integrated approaches for groundwater protection, seismic risk assessment, and sustainable infrastructure. These growing demands underscore the need for accurate subsurface characterization and the integration of multiple datasets to support effective decision-making in environmental and engineering applications. This thesis introduces advanced joint inversion approaches to improve the quantitative interpretation of multi-method geophysical datasets. By combining electrical resistivity, seismic velocity and induced polarization data, the proposed methods exploit the complementary sensitivities of each technique to different subsurface properties thereby reducing interpretation bias. New contributions include the development of inversion algorithms, unsupervised classification tools for target detection, and structural and petrophysical joint inversion strategies. These approaches advance the non-invasive reconstruction of environmental and engineering targets, improving accuracy, reducing subjective bias, and supporting decision-making in environmental and civil engineering.
