Descrizione dell’attivita’ di ricerca:

Il lavoro di ricerca e' stato indirizzato verso la fluidodinamica di base e applicata. Per mezzo di tecniche ottiche di misura si e' analizzato il comportamento dei cosidetti flussi turbolenti di taglio ("turbulent shear flows") cioe' di quei campi fluidodinamici nei quali e' rilevante l'interazione tra fenomeni diffusivi e dissipativi. Tale interazione si manifesta su un vasto insieme di strutture vorticose che sono schematizzabili nelle strutture di piccola e grande scala, (rappresentate dalla scala di Kolmogorov e integrale). Le prime corrispondono a regioni nelle quali i valori dei gradienti di velocita', che determinano l' energia di dissipazione e la vorticita', sono particolarmente elevati. Lo studio di esse e' stato intrapreso con il duplice scopo di evidenziare l'allontanamento dalle condizioni di omogeneita' e isotropia e di analizzare il fenomeno dell'intermittenza. Lo studio delle strutture di piccola scala riveste percio' carattere di ricerca di base. Le strutture di grande scala sono invece responsabili di gran parte dei fenomeni diffusivi: lo studio della loro formazione e interazione, pur rivestendo importanza per la comprensione della fluidodinamica di base, e' particolarmente efficace per la descrizione dei fenomeni di mescolamento che trovano vasto utilizzo nel campo della ricerca applicata.
