Giorgio Michalopoulos, PhD Candidate in Economics and Journalist
I am a PhD candidate in Economics at the University of La Sapienza in Rome, with an academic background that includes a degree in Economics and Social Sciences from Bocconi University in Milan and a Master's degree in Political Economy from La Sapienza.
My research focuses on analyzing the impact of wage policies on the labor market, with particular attention to the effect of the introduction and increases in the legal minimum wage on worker productivity. The focus of my study is on regions with lower wages, specifically Southern Italy and Northeast Brazil. The main objective of my research is to highlight how targeted minimum wage interventions can help stimulate productivity growth and reduce regional inequalities.
For the development of my research, I use advanced methodologies in two internationally recognized areas: Behavioral Economics (within the Department of Economics and Law at La Sapienza, under the supervision of Prof. Giuseppe Attanasi) and Spatial Econometrics and Microeconomics (at the Center for Regional Development and Planning at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, in collaboration with Professors Pedro Amaral and Juan Pablo Gama). My research aims not only to contribute to the academic debate but also to provide valuable insights for the development of economic policies that can support the development of less privileged regions and promote greater equity in the labor market.
In this regard, throughout my career, I actively seek collaboration opportunities with various universities, organizing and participating in seminars, events, and conferences. Among the institutions I have collaborated with are the Federal University of Bahia (teaching International Economic Organizations with Prof. Andrea Califano and the event "Another Brics in The Wall," with guest James K. Galbraith), the Catholic University (seminars), and the University of Salento (lectures in the Economic Journalism course and organizing the "International Adam Smith Society Conference 2025").
Over the years, I have gained experience in writing and managing projects to secure funding for academic events, including several from the Young Scholars Initiative, which have enabled me to organize networking and international scientific dissemination activities.
