He got his Master Degree in Nuclear Engineering (1984) and PhD in Energy Engineering (1989) with a thesis on “Nuclear Severe Accidents and mitigation systems”. Postgraduate certificate in Industrial Safety and Protection (1992).
His past academic experience is: Lecturer in Nuclear Plants from 1986 to 2000, he was Adjunct Professor (2000-2006) and then Assistant Professor (2006-2011) in Thermal Sciences and Building Physics at the Faculty of Architecture, and in Nuclear Engineering (2011-2017) at the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering, of Sapienza, University of Rome.
Associate Professor since January 2018, he got the habilitation by the Italian National Scientific Habilitation as Full Professor (2017) in Thermal sciences, energy technology, building physics and Nuclear Engineering.
He is actually Full Professor in Nuclear Engineering since March 2022, Coordinator of the PhD Programme in Energy and Environment and Director of the II level Master in Radiation Protection.

Teaching activity (2021/2022):
2nd level Courses on “Nuclear Reactor Design” (9 CFU), “Two-phase thermal-hydraulic" (9 CFU).
Supervisor of 17 PhD Theses on Nuclear Engineering, 20 annual Research grants, 8 Starting Grant projects for young researchers (local), 3 EUROFusion Engineering Grants (3-years grants)

Institutional activities:
He is currently Scientific Responsible of the Thermal-Hydraulics and Numerical Simulation laboratories, Nuclear Engineering group leader and member of the Executive Committee and of the Research Quality Committee of DIAEE (Department of Astronautical, Electrical and Energy Engineering) – Sapienza, University of Rome.
Gianfranco Caruso is Liaison Officer of the OECD-NEA Data Bank for the DIAEE. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the PhD program in "Energy and Environment" since 2015.
He is Representative Member of Sapienza in the Governing Board of CIRTEN (Consorzio Interuniversitario per la Ricerca Tecnologica Nucleare) since 2015.
Member of 5 national selection Panels for fixed-term researchers in Nuclear Plants, external reviewer of 10 PhD Theses and member of 11 Committees for the final PhD exam in several Italian and foreign Universities.

Publications:
Author of more than 200 scientific publications in international (91) and national (17) Journals, international (63) and national (56) Conferences in the field of nuclear energy and technology, heat transfer and thermal-hydraulics and about 60 technical reports. He is author of 3 educational books and 4 chapters in Manuals.
He is a reviewer for 24 scientific journals in the field of energy, nuclear engineering, heat transfer and thermal-hydraulics, with 172 manuscripts reviewed (https://publons.com/researcher/2790934/gianfranco-caruso/peer-review/).

Research activities:
From 1984 he acquired particular expertise in the following topics, mostly well documented by scientific publications: advanced heat transfer and thermal-hydraulics in fission and fusion nuclear plants; magnetohydrodynamics; alternative energy and energy saving; air heating and conditioning; two-phases heat transfer and flow; design of components and systems for energy production plants; studies on physical properties of fluids; heat exchange equipments; thermodynamic cycles of nuclear power plants; nuclear safety in fission and fusion plants. His recent activity is mainly focused on safety analyses for fusion reactor plants.
He participated as researcher to several national (PRIN, FIRB) and international projects (since the 4th EU FWP).
From 1994 to 2005 participated, in collaboration with ENEA-FUS, in the activities of the Euratom Fusion Technical Program in the framework of the European Fusion Development Agreement, concerning the validation of computer codes for the simulation of accidents in fusion reactors, contributing to the development and use of the CONSEN program, participating in international Benchmark and Standard Problems. He was research group leader in two EU projects (ESNII+ in the 7th EU FWP and SESAME in the H2020 EU FWP).
Actually he is research group leader in ongoing projects (MUSA and RADONORM in the H2020 EU FWP) and scientific Referent person of the research activities at Sapienza (Linked Third Party of ENEA) in the EUROFUSION Consortium (H2020 Action - Grant Agreement 633053 and Horizon Europe Action - Grant Agreement 101052200).

Memberships:
Member of the Scientific Council of International Center of Heat and Mass Transfer (ICHMT). Member of UIT (Italian Union of Thermal-Hydraulics). Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
Gianfranco Caruso is "Subject Editor" for "Heat and Mass Transfer" in the Editorial Board of the journal "Latin American Applied Research (LAAR)" - ISSN: 0327-0793.

Awards:
In 2003, he was awarded of the Prize “Le Scienze” – IV Ed. - as Young Researcher in Nuclear Engineering.
