Thesis title: Tra Rotari e Giustiniano: per uno studio delle glosse al diritto longobardo-franco nei codici ambrosiani del Liber Papiensis

The study of glosses on legal texts has almost exclusively been explored from a civil law perspective, and indeed, less attention has been given in literature to investigations focused specifically on the glosses in manuscripts of Lombard-French law. Moreover, legal historians have not always paid enough attention to the codicological aspects of the glossed manuscript, which could effectively support any reflection on the "stratification" of a complex text like a legal document. On the other hand, the analysis of the script itself is complicated by the cultural environment that produced it: an environment, that of the jurists from the late 11th century onward, characterized by the high mobility of its actors. The research aims to systematically analyze the relationship between the gloss, understood as a text, and the code as the vector of that text, considering that the peculiarities of this relationship are also determined by the non-literary nature of the legislative text. Another objective is to reflect on what elements should be highlighted when describing a glossed text, starting with the analysis of the Ambrosian manuscripts of the Liber Papiensis and, in particular, the Edict of Rotari. Defining a methodological model will ultimately allow for a broader perspective, expanding the scope of observation to the study of marginalia preserved in other codices.
