Claudio Cesaroni (male) is a research scientist at Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) and adjunct professor at Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Tecnología - Universidad Nacional de Tucumán. Since December 2019 he is the head of the “Upper Atmosphere and Radiopropagation” unit at INGV. He received his MSc in Physics in 2011 at “Sapienza” University of Roma and his PhD degree in Geophysics in 2015 at “Alma Mater Studiorium” University of Bologna. From 2015 to 2017 he was a postdoctoral researcher at INGV. He was visiting scientist at “Space Research Centre of Polish Academy of science” Warsaw in 2014. In 2023, he was awarded the "Alexander Chizhevsky" International Medal for Space Weather and Space Climate.
His main research topics are:
- Space Weather;
- Effects of the solar and geomagnetic storm on the ionospheric plasma at low, mid and high latitude;
- Travelling Ionospheric Disturbances;
- Lithosphere-Ionosphere coupling;
- Machine Learning for Ionospheric forecasting.
He was involved in several international project funded by European commission (IPS, CALIBRA etc.) and European Space Agency (MIMOSA2, ERICA, IRIS, etc.) as research unit leader. At present, he is the PI of the ATTEMPT INGV project for the investigation of different natural hazards interconnection from spaceborne data. He is leading the NORISK initiative in the framework of the INGV and Italian Space Agency agreement aiming at realizing a new ionospheric observatory into the Broglio Space Center (Malindi, Kenya). He developed several algorithms for GNSS and ionosonde data analysis, mitigation of the ionospheric effects on precise positioning, nowcasting and forecasting models for TEC and scintillation indices prediction. He is author of a model for the regional short-term empirical forecasting of such parameters that has been internationally patented and of a neural network based Global TEC forecasting model.
In the last 2 years, he was the scientific supervisor for the realization of the new SWIT system and eSWua web portal (eswua.ingv.it) for the acquisition, storage and dissemination of INGV ionospheric data and products. He was co-supervisor of 2 PhD students.He has been awarded as Young Scientist by International Union of Radio Science (URSI) during the 1st URSI Atlantic Radio Science Conference 2015. Since 2018 he is responsible for the maintenance of the systems producing data and products to be delivered to the PECASUS consortium for the provision of a Space Weather service to the International Civil Aviation Organization. He is author and co-author of more than 60 papers on international JCR journals.
