Research Activities:
• Development of self-assembling nanogels based on hydrophobic derivatives of polysaccharides for applications in drug delivery: derivatization of biocompatible and bioactive polysaccharides with hydrophobic molecules to obtain the development of self-assembling nanostructures in aqueous medium (nanogels). Such nanostructures, stable and non-cytotoxic, are studied as carriers of drugs or proteins in anticancer, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory therapies.
• Synthesis and physico-chemical characterization of polysaccharide matrices in the gel phase and study of their potential use as drug delivery systems (DDS): development of gel polysaccharide matrices (both chemical and physical, in the form of massive hydrogels, injectable gels, beads, microspheres) for applications in the modified drug release, and their structural (NMR, SAXS) and mechanical (rheology, dynamometry) characterization. Study of the release kinetics of biologically active molecules, small molecules or therapeutic proteins, from hydrogels in hydrated or dried form.
• Synthesis and physico-chemical characterization of polymeric prodrugs: development of pharmacologically active derivatives based on hyaluronic acid and their physico-chemical characterization by means of spectrophotometric and spectroscopic techniques.
