In order to favour a multidisciplinary approach, he has collaborated with several scientific societies in this field, such as ESGAR, ESDO, ASGE. He has further divided the guideline topics according to the techniques, and he has substantially contributed to the development of guidelines and position papers in the field of colonoscopy and upper-GI endoscopy. He has also promoted the dissemination of ESGE documents by favouring the translation in the different European languages. 2) As chair of the International Affairs Working Group, he has performed a survey on the epidemiology and status of endoscopy in Africa, and he has applied for the first time the Cascade methodology to adapt ESGE guidelines to less resourceful settings. Research 1) Clinical trials to assess the efficacy and safety of new techniques for colorectal neoplasia detection and characterization. Pioneer work on FUSE, Endoring, methylen Blue-MMX, electronic chromoendoscopy (NBI, BLI, LCI), colon capsule, CT colonography. These trials have been largely based on international collaborations, including American centres, like the Indiana University (Dr. D.K. Rex), Mayo Clinic (Dr. M. Wallace), and Kansas University (Dr. P. Sharma), and several European centres. 2) Clinical trials to assess the efficacy and safety of new techniques for advanced endoscopic resection. Pioneer work on new solution for EMR, and a large prospective multicentre study on EMR (SCALP; in press). 3) Prospective studies on the long-term impact of organized screening program based on endoscopy. Pioneer work on detection rates at different rounds and risk of interval cancer. 4) Simulation models to assess the cost and benefit of multiple strategies for colorectal cancer screening and colonoscopy techniques, including original models for resect and discard strategy, quality of colonoscopy, and non-anaesthesiologist-propofol administration. 5) Meta-analysis and systematic reviews for several fields of GI-endoscopy, including different techniques of colorectal neoplasia detection and resection, as well as post-endoscopic surveillance protocols.
