Research: Decision-making autonomy in armed conflicts: a critical analysis of lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS) under international humanitarian law, State and individual criminal responsibility.

Amalio Petruzziello is a PhD candidate in the National PhD in "Peace Studies," enrolled in the "Human Rights, Peoples' Rights, and Peacebuilding" curriculum. His research provides a strictly legal analysis, under international law, of decision-making autonomy in armed conflicts. The project investigates the implications of lethal autonomous weapons (LAWS) under international law, with a specific focus on State and individual criminal responsibility. Amalio has a deep passion for international law, with a specific and advanced interest in International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and International Criminal Law (ICL). This passion is supported by a strong academic background, including a Master's degree with Honors in International Relations (LUMSA, Rome) with a thesis on the international obligations of governing authorities and of third States in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem, and in Israel. A fundamental component of his training was his internship at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations in New York. In this capacity, he worked closely with the Sixth Committee (Legal Affairs) of the General Assembly, further strengthening his knowledge of multilateral legal procedures and issues. Alongside his research, he currently serves as a Teaching Assistant for the Chair of International Law at "La Sapienza" University of Rome.
