Research: Peace Education Practices in Italian Primary Schools: Analysis, Evaluation and Educational Innovation
Alice Iammarino is a PhD candidate in the 42nd cycle of the National PhD in Peace Studies, coordinated by Sapienza University of Rome. She is enrolled in Curriculum 4 “Peace Education and Migration” and carries out her research at the University of L’Aquila. At the same university she earned her master’s degree in Primary Education with honours. Her thesis was on the transformative power of education in contexts of war, as a means of care and of rebuilding bonds in communities affected by trauma. She then obtained a specialization in support teaching for pupils with disabilities from the University “G. d’Annunzio” of Chieti-Pescara. She is a tenured primary school teacher. Her research interests include peace education, children’s rights, gender pedagogy and inclusive education. Her doctoral project focuses on Peace Education in Italian primary schools. It aims to understand how Peace Education is interpreted and put into practice, what meanings school actors attach to it, and what potential it holds for classroom climate, participation and the nonviolent management of conflict. The research also seeks to co-design evidence-based pathways for educational innovation together with schools. In this way it aims to strengthen the role of schools in building a culture of peace, democratic citizenship and respect for human rights.
