This research addresses the multidimensional crisis of small historic villages in the European context, particularly in Italy and Spain, proposing a radical paradigm shift for regeneration processes. Starting from an analysis of depopulation dynamics and a critical review of the most recent national policy tools, the research moves beyond a diagnostic approach to develop a theoretical-practical model aimed at actively creating well-being. The innovative conceptual contribution lies in adopting the salutogenesis paradigm. Regeneration is redefined as creating “salutogenic places”, strengthening residents’ “Sense of Coherence”. This approach highlights the need for a strategic synergy between the hard power of material interventions and the soft power of intangible dynamics, identifying a system of re-generative levers for well-being. The methodology employed is qualitative and based on the triangulation of multiple sources: a systematic analysis of both established and recent literature, drawing from a broad range of international, national, and local sources; a study of successful case studies across Italy and Spain, with a specific focus on central Italy and northeastern Spain; interviews with multidisciplinary expert opinion leaders from both countries and beyond; and a final phase of action research, involving direct, hands-on experimentation in the field. The results distill a set of effective strategic actions, validating the salutogenic model. The findings also suggest a transition in the designer’s role towards that of an architect-orchestrator of integrated processes. In conclusion, the thesis argues that small historic centers can become laboratories for future living scenarios, provided that a process is initiated in which the rediscovery of ancient traditions and the enhancement of the local identity’s peculiarities become the solid foundation for generating new vocations oriented towards the holistic well-being of the community.
