Laboratory of Signal Processing for Communications (SPCOM)

The research activities carried out at the SPCOM Laboratory span a wide area of topics mainly related to signal processing methods for machine learning, distributed optimization over networks, mobile edge computing. The focus is on methodological aspects, but applications to hot research areas such as big data or mobile edge computing, within the 5G roadmap, are strongly encouraged. The Lab is very active in European projects and it has established over the years several collaborations across Europe and USA, so that PhD students have the possibility to interact with world class research centers in Europe and USA.

A solid mathematical background or attitude to a rigorous problem formulation is appreciated.

Research topics currently being addressed at the SPCOM Lab include:

  • Machine learning methods based on algebraic graph theory and algebraic topology;
  • Signal processing over graphs and hypergraphs;
  • Mobile edge computing;
  • Optimal resource allocation in the 5G ecosystem;

The Lab has recently won a new project, within the Europe-Japan Horizon 2020 program, entitled 5G-MiEdge: Millimeter-wave Edge cloud as an enabler for 5G ecosystem. The project is starting on July 1st, 2016, and it has a duration of 36 months. The EU partners are:

  • FRAUNHOFER GESELLSCHAFT ZUR FORDERUNG DER ANGEWANDTEN FORSCHUNG EV Germany
  • COMMISSARIAT A L’ENERGIE ATOMIQUE
  • ET AUX ENERGIES ALTERNATIVES France
  • INTEL DEUTSCHLAND GMBH Germany
  • TELECOM ITALIA SPA Italy
  • UNIVERSITA DEGLI STUDI DI ROMA LA SAPIENZA

Participation of PhD students to the project is highly welcome.
