Machine Learning for Networks
Instructor: Prof. Paolo Di Lorenzo, Prof. Sergio Barbarossa, Department of Information Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications (DIET), Via Eudossiana 18, 00184 Rome, Italy.
Dates: Late June - Early July, 2022
Place: Seminar room at 2nd floor DIET Dpt, Via Eudossiana 18, 00184, Rome, Italy/Google Meet
Language: English
The course is divided into two parts, whose description follows.
Part 1: Learning from Network Data (5 hours, Sergio Barbarossa). The goal of this part is to make students able to represent information distributed over a graph, and to perform inferences about network data collected over, e.g., technological, biological, or information networks. The course will introduce fundamental tools from algebraic graph theory, spectral clustering, and graph signal processing, which will be used to perform unsupervised and semi-supervised learning over network data. Also, state of the art methods for inferring the graph topology that better describes relationships among observed data will be presented in some detail. Finally, extensions to methods incorporating multi-way relationships among data (e.g., hypergraphs, simplicial complexes) will be discussed.
Part 2: Distributed Edge Machine Learning (5 hours, Paolo Di Lorenzo). This part introduces Edge Machine Learning: a new paradigm aimed at solving learning tasks in a distributed fashion from data collected by heterogeneous devices (e.g., smartphones, sensors, drones, etc.) at the edge of the wireless network, while satisfying strict latency/energy constraints imposed by applications (e.g., automated driving, industry 4.0, etc.) foreseen in the 5G roadmap. The course will introduce fundamental tools from convex, nonconvex, and stochastic optimization, which will be used to (i) distribute the machine learning task among several machines, (ii) adaptively learn the joint communication (e.g., power, bits) and computation (e.g., CPU cycles) resource allocation strategy, in order to strike the best trade-off between energy spent by the system and accuracy of the learning tasks, while meeting strict latency constraints.

Numerical modelling and simulation of electromagnetic problems with open-source finite-difference time-domain software
Instructor: Prof. Lara Pajewski, Sapienza
Dates: April 2020
Place: Lecture Room TBD, Via Eudossiana 18, 00184, Rome, Italy
Language: English
As is well known, several real-world electromagnetic problems cannot be solved analytically. Computational numerical techniques can overcome the inability to derive closed-form solutions of Maxwell's equations under various constitutive relations of media, initial and boundary conditions. This makes computational electromagnetics crucial to the design and characterisation of antennas, radar, satellite and other communication systems, medical imaging systems, waveguide components, nanophotonic structures, and more.
During this practical and interactive Phd Training Course, you will learn how to use gprMax and E2GPR for numerically solving your electromagnetic problems.
gprMax is open source and versatile software that solves Maxwell’s equations in a two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) domain using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. It was designed for simulating ground penetrating radar (GPR) radiation and scattering problems, nonetheless it can actually be employed to model electromagnetic wave propagation in a wide variety of fields such as engineering, geophysics, archaeology, and medicine. gprMax is command-line-driven software written in Python (with some performance-critical parts written in Cython) and can run on either CPU or GPU. The CPU solver has been parallelised using OpenMP, which enables it to run on multi-core CPUs. The GPU solver has been developed using the NVIDIA CUDA programming model.
E2GPR is a freeware tool implemented in Java, conceived to assist in the creation, modification, and analysis of 2D gprMax models through a computer-aided design (CAD) system.
Accordingly, this Phd Training Course will include sessions on the following topics:
- Introduction to electromagnetic modelling
- Background and theory of the FDTD method;
- An overview of gprMax, covering basic and more advanced features;
- Installing gprMax on your computer and running your first simulation;
- Using E2GPR;
- Opening and viewing the simulation results with Python, Matlab or Paraview, and creating wave propagation videos;
- Detailled and guided examples of different electromagnetic simulations including: antenna modelling, ground penetrating radar modeling, modelling of heterogeneous and frequency-dispersive materials;
- How gprMax and E2GPR can be used for modelling other electromagnetic applications.
We can also tailor part of the course towards your specific modelling requirements (if you are interested please get in touch with the Trainer in advance, to discuss your requirements).
This Training Course may be of your interest if you are a PhD Student with limited electromagnetic modelling skills, and you wish to learn how to correctly use a simulator to solve your electromagnetic radiation, propagation, and scattering problems. The course may be of your interest if you are a PhD Student with advanced electromagnetic modelling skills, as well: in fact, if you are already using other in-house or commercial simulators in your research studies, you might consider using the free tools presented herein for comparison or validation purposes.

Machine Learning for Networks
Instructor: Prof. Paolo Di Lorenzo, Prof. Sergio Barbarossa, Department of Information Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications (DIET), Via Eudossiana 18, 00184 Rome, Italy.
Dates: late June - early July, 2020
Place: DIET 09 room or Seminar room, second floor of the DIET department

Synopsis: The idea of this PhD Course stems from the converging paths of telecommunications, remote sensing and aerial acoustics toward the use of wide- and ultra-wideband (larger than an octave) signals, received by a sensor array, made up of antennas, microphones, hydrophones, etc…. However, the models commonly adopted in open literature are extremely simplified and neglect relevant application issues, such as sensor non-ideality and mis-calibration, the continuous change of propagation and signal models with frequency, the presence of echoes and reverberation, that impair the consistency of Maximum Likelihood parametric estimators, their suboptimal subspace approximations and MIMO transmission models.
Some scientific contributions, though dispersed into several disciplines, can be used to build a unitary framework and derive improved and innovative solutions for real world telecommunication, remote sensing, that can be generalized to pattern analysis in photographic and SAR images.
