The project of Dr. Eng. Ciro Fusco (32nd cycle, tutor Paola Di Mascio, supervisor Mara Lombardi), entitled "The increase of safety in road tunnels: development of an indoor navigation system as support for pedestrian exodus" developed during the PhD course for filing a patent application for industrial invention by Sapienza University of Rome (application for filing No. 102020000003028 of 02/14/2020).
The project develops an Indoor Positioning (IPS) system, based on the use of BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) Beacons, usable with a common smartphone. The main application is to provide dynamic information to tunnel users about their position and the best route for leaving the tunnel on foot, both in ordinary and emergency conditions. Other applications are as support to maintenance, rescue teams and control of robotic machines.
