This seminar explores emerging perspectives in the most advanced experiments in ecological planning, which aim to understand and integrate the agency of non-human components (ecosystems, ecotopes, animals, organisms, technical objects, concepts) into territorial transformation processes, and to re-establish a coevolutionary relationship between nature, cities, and society. In an era of profound socio-ecological crisis, the modernist vision that separates nature and human settlements, society and resources, politics and technology lies at the root of the deep social, cultural, and ecological unsustainability of the dominant development model. Therefore, an approach that recognizes the ecological and technical dimensions as key elements of an innovative urban planning approach—informed by principles of territorial self-sustainability and radically open, collaborative governance—appears necessary.
Starting from a discussion of the volume *“Transizioni dal basso. Conflitti socio-ecologici, tecnologie civiche e urbanistica sperimentale”* (Bottom-Up Transitions: Socio-Ecological Conflicts, Civic Technologies, and Experimental Urban Planning), along with the description of several case studies and experiments, the seminar will investigate how innovative approaches, tools, and models of spatial planning and governance can foster bottom-up transformation processes of the dominant development model, toward locally self-sustaining and inclusive systems.
Additionally, the seminar aims to delve into the role of co-evolutionary practices that, by integrating ecology and urban planning, pave the way for more resilient urban models, constantly striving for a new balance between technology, nature, and society.
