SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY
Ordinary member of the SIMLA Society, in the period 2007-2010 he was a member of the Board of Directors and was deputy national secretary of the SISMLA until October 2000; until October 2000 he was a member of the board of the Forensic Pathologists Group of SIMLA since its foundation, dedicating important activities of organization and research. Since May 2010 he has been appointed Head of the medico-legal Observatory of the Rivista Responsabilità Civile e Previdenza, published for the Giuffrè Editor by the Bocconi University of Milan. In October 2001 he was proposed and elected in the Advisory Editorial Board of the International Journal of Legal Medicine, magazine with the highest impact factor in the world for forensic medicine. Since 2008 he has joined the Editorial Board of Forensic Science, Medicine, and Pathology, a magazine published by Springer. He has been a Member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences since 1994, and since 1999 has been promoted to the highest rank of Fellow. In the VQR exercise organized by the ANVUR for the evaluation of research in Italy in the years 2004-2010, the Institute of Legal Medicine of Foggia, under its direction, was first in the SSD MED43, with an average overall score of 0.94 / 1 and an evaluation of excellence in 70% of the scientific products presented.
He was appointed GEV sub-coordinator for the SSD MED42, MED43, MED44, MED01, MED02, during the exercise of the research evaluation in Italy, coordinated by the ANVUR, for the period 2011-2014.
Systematic and documented is the participation in the fundamental conferences of forensic and legal medicine, of Deontology and Bioethics. In September 2002, he was the speaker of the official report on Morphologic findings in sudden cardiac death at the IAFS International Convention held in Montpellier from September 2-7, 2002. In September 2008 he presented the official report on Sudden Cardiac as a speaker at the IAFS International Convention held in Osaka from 1-5 September 2008. On 25 June 2010 he was an official speaker at the Summer Meeting of the Swiss Society of Legal Medicine, in Lausanne, with a reading entitled: "Sudden cardiac death and stress-induced cardiomyopathy".
He is co-author of monographic works (Legal Medicine in Odontostomatology, Commentaries on the Code of Medical Deontology 1991 and 1996, Damage to the visual function: traumatogenesis and assessment 1990, Health protection 1993, Cardiovascular disease and sudden death, Diagnostics and medico-legal evaluation 2004); editor of the Proceedings of the National Conference "The medical responsibility in the civil sphere: current events and perspectives" (Siena 22-24 September 1988); of the congress review "Neonatal care: clinical and legal medical problems" (Siena 6 June 1992). For the prestigious CRC Press is co-author of the book "Pathology of the heart and sudden death in the forensic medicine", published in 2006. In 2007 the "Manual - Atlas of forensic autopsy technique" was published by the Piccin, Italy. In 2010 the CRC Press published the book "Forensic Autopsy. A Handbook and Atlas" (in collaboration with Pomara C. and Karch S.B.). He was a member of the staff of the "Guide to professional practice for surgeons and dentists" produced by C.G. Scientific medical editions, Turin, since the first edition (1989).
For the best scientific production of the period 1988-89, he received the Leoncini and Macaggi-Perrando prizes from SIMLA and, for 1993, the Gerin Prize awarded during the SIMLA 1996 Conference.

The scientific production is documented by more than 350 publications in national and international specialized magazines. Indexed and impacted publications n. 216 (Scopus Marzo 2019), h-index 30.
