Thesis title: Simulation and advanced modeling of innovative waste-to-chemicals plants in the circular economy: Gasification of Refuse Derived Fuel

The increasing awareness of environmental issues and the need to reduce landfill use have driven research towards innovative waste valorization technologies. In this context, high-temperature gasification with direct melting (HT&DMG) represents a promising solution for converting municipal and industrial solid waste into high-quality syngas, with applications in Waste-to-Chemicals (WtC) processes. This research focuses on advanced modeling and simulation of waste gasification processes through three complementary approaches: - Kinetic simulation in Aspen Plus to predict syngas composition as a function of operating conditions. - Dynamic numerical modeling in Comsol Multiphysics to analyze temporal variations of physicochemical properties and optimize mass and energy balances. - Three-dimensional CFD modeling in Ansys Fluent to study fluid dynamics and thermal distribution within the reactor. The integration of these tools enabled the optimization of operating parameters, enhanced syngas yield, and minimized the formation of undesirable by-products such as tar and dioxins. The results contribute to the advancement of gasification technologies for resource recovery from waste, promoting a more sustainable and efficient approach to producing chemical feedstocks from alternative sources.
