L’attività ad oggi condotta, oltre che per la parte scientifica di pertinenza dell’inquadramento come Professore Universitario a tempo pieno, è caratterizzata da un assiduo impegno nella gestione, Direzione e/o Presidenza anche di rilevanti strutture assimilabili ad Organismi di Ricerca Pubblici e Pubblico-Privati affiancata al coordinamento di grandi progetti ed alla responsabilità scientifica ed operativa di attività di ricerca.
Ha promosso e coordinato iniziative per la formazione sia in ambito regionale che internazionale, tramite la stipula di accordi con il Kyoto Institute of Technology e l’identificazione, nonché la disposizione, delle forme di supporto per periodo di stage all’estero di giovani ricercatori.
Ha inoltre svolto attività di valutazione indipendente di strutture e di progetti di ricerca e sviluppo nel settore dell’ingegneria industriale e della scienza e tecnologia dei materiali, sia nazionali che internazionali, con la partecipazione all’azione di valutazione degli Istituti CNR promossa dall’Ente nonché come componente di Panel e – in qualità di esperto singolo – tramite la valutazione di proposte di ricerca industriale e/o sviluppo precompetitivo a valere su fondi regionali e nazionali.

Dall’1.11.2001 è Professore Universitario di Ruolo di Prima Fascia presso la Facoltà di Ingegneria Civile ed Industriale dell’Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza”, Settore Scientifico Disciplinare ING-IND22 “Scienza e Tecnologia dei Materiali”.
ATTIVITÀ DIDATTICA
Docente di “Scienza e Tecnologia dei Materiali”, per il corso di Laurea in Ingegneria Aerospaziale dell’Università di Roma “La Sapienza”, di “Materiali Aeronautici e Spaziali/Aerospace Materials” per la Laurea Specialistica in Ingegneria Aeronautica e Spaziale.
E’ stato docente di riferimento e membro del Comitato Organizzatore del corso di Alta Formazione in Innovazione e valorizzazione della ricerca “Research Enhancement & Development” dell’Università degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza e co-Direttore del corso di Alta Formazione “Project Management and Innovation” dell’Università degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza.
Già docente dei corsi di “Materiali” per il corso di Laurea in Ingegneria Chimica, "Analisi Chimica Strumentale", “Ingegneria delle superfici e film sottili”, "Scienza dei Materiali II" e “Scienza e Tecnologia dei Materiali Ceramici” presso la Scuola Trasporti e Materiali dell’Esercito Italiano.
Già docente in diverse Scuole Nazionali e Master (Scuole AIMAT, Scuole di Scienza dei Materiali INSTM-CNR, Master CIVEN - Coordinamento Interuniversitario Veneto per le nanotecnologie).

ATTIVITÀ DI RICERCA
L’attività di ricerca ha coperto diversi settori relativi alla Scienza e Tecnologia dei Materiali, alla Chimica Applicata ed ai Fondamenti Chimici delle Tecnologie dei Materiali tra cui:
- materiali, tecnologie, processi per impieghi spaziali ed aeronautici, inclusi compositi ceramici per applicazioni su velivoli da rientro e materiali ablativi di nuova generazione;
- degrado e protezione dei materiali, tecnologie di ingegneria delle superfici, materiali e rivestimenti nanostrutturati per applicazioni strutturali e funzionali;
- metodologie di modellizzazione di processo/prodotto e di ottimizzazione di processi produttivi e di tecnologie di trattamento/trasformazione dei materiali:
- studio e sviluppo di tecnologie innovative e materiali per la realizzazione di manufatti, relative analisi di sostenibilità tecnico-economica-ambientale finalizzate anche al risparmio/efficienza energetica nell’ottica della sostenibilità.
In sintesi, l’attività di ricerca sviluppata nel corso degli anni si è essenzialmente focalizzata sulla ideazione e preparazione di materiali e rivestimenti con caratteristiche adatte a possibili impieghi nelle tecnologie avanzate (KeT), con particolare riferimento al settore dello spazio, dell’aeronautica e della meccanica avanzata e allo sviluppo di tecnologie di fabbricazione innovative quali l’additive manufacturing e di materiali/tecnologie per la riduzione dell’impatto ambientale e il miglioramento dell’efficienza energetica di prodotto/processo.
Tra gli altri, è (è stato) responsabile scientifico di progetto o di unità operativa per:
- contratti di ricerca con Enti Privati ed Aziende Nazionali ed Internazionali nel settore dei materiali avanzati per l’aeronautica e lo spazio;
- responsabile del Working Package “Surface Functionality and Composites “ e del sottoprogetto “Aeroengines”, nell’ambito del Progetto Integrato “Structural Ceramic Nanocomposites for top-end Functional Applications (NANOKER), Finanziato dalla Comunità Economica Europea nell’ambito del VI Programma Quadro, Priority Thematic Area: 3: Nanotechnology and nanosciences, knowledge-based multifunctional materials, new production processes and devices, NMP Research Area: 3.4.2. Knowledge-based Multifunctional Materials, 3.4.2.2. Technologies associated with the production, transformation and processing of knowledge-based multifunctional materials and biomaterials, 3.4.2.2-2 Development of Nanostructured Materials, FP6-2003-NMP-NI-3. Autore di più di 150 lavori pubblicati su Riviste Internazionali/Nazionali ed Atti di Convegni Internazionali/Nazionali, di due brevetti internazionali su materiali per applicazioni spaziali e due nazionali. La produzione scientifica censita dalle banche dati internazionali risulta in un valore di h-index pari a 23 con 1563 citazioni (fonti Scopus).
