Stefano Lucidi was born in Roma, Italy, on December 2, 1955.

He received the "Laurea" degree in Electronic Engineering (summa cum laude) from the University of Rome "La Sapienza" on October 1980.

He attended the specialization school Corso di Specializzazione in Ingegneria dei Sistemi di Controllo e Calcolo Automatici   of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" (summa cum laude) in 1981.

 

From August 1982 to October 1992 he was Researcher at the Istituto di Analisi e dei Sistemi e Informatica of the National Research Council of Italy.

From September 1985 to May 1986 he was Honorary Fellow of the Mathematics Research Center, of University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA.

From November 1992 to October 2000 he was Associate Professor of University of Rome "La Sapienza". Currently he is Full Professor of Operations Research of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" (since November 2000).

From November 2010 to October 2012, he was the Director of the PhD Programme in Operations Research of the University of Rome "La Sapienza".

 

He teaches Operations Research in the first level degrees in Engineering Management and Continuous  Optimization  in the second level degrees in Engineering Management.

He belongs to the Department of Computer, Control, and Management Engineering “Antonio Ruberti” of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" (since 1992).

 

In the years 1996-1997 he was the Italian principal investigator of the international British Council-Italian Ministry of University and Research research program "Exploiting negative curvature in large scale nonlinear programming".  Since 1994 he is acting as principal investigator of research programs of national interest in the field of Optimization funded by the Ministry of Scientific Research. For many years he was scientific consultant at the Istituto di Analisi e dei Sistemi e Informatica of the National Research Council of Italy.

From October 2017 he is member of the Editorial Board of the international journal 4OR-A Quarterly Journal of Operations Research.

 

 

He is founding partner of “ACTOR SRL. Analytics, Control Technologies and Operations Research” Spin-Off company of the University of Rome "La Sapienza".

 

In September 2015 he was one of the winners of Airo Best Application 2015 Award with the work “Optimal deployment of a cruise fleet”.

 

His research interests are mainly focused on the study, definition and application of nonlinear optimization methods and algorithms.

The more methodological part of his research activity has concerned the following topics: unconstrained minimization methods, constrained minimization methods, methods for nonsmooth optimization problems, derivative-free methods, global optimization methods, optimization methods for the training of Support Vector Machine.

 

The more applicative part has concerned the following topics: analysis of DNA distributions from flow cytometry, analysis of gene expression profiling experiments,  analysis of binary stars systems in astrophysics, railway yield management problems, optimal designs of electrical motors, optimal designs of electrical  magnetic apparatus, optimal ship design problems, managements of healthcare services, planning problems of  cruise itineraries, analysis of gene expressions.
