Sergio Lubello (Lecce, 21.03.1968) is full Professor of Italian Linguistics (L-PHIL-LIT/12) at the University of Salerno; previously a permanent researcher (2004-2011) and subsequently Associate Professor (2011-April 2016) in the same university. He lecturers in History of the Italian Language, Italian Language Didactics, Italian Linguistics, Italian Language and Media.
He graduated with a degree in History of the Italian Language at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa and earned a Ph.D. in Language Sciences at the Marc Bloch University in Strasburg. Initially as a scholarship holder of the Scuola Normale, then as Max Pfister’s wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (scientific assistant), he worked for twelve years in Germany, in Saarbrücken, at the headquarters of the Lessico Etimologico Italiano (now chaired by W. Schweickard). From October 1992 to March 2004, he taught in various capacities (Assistant, Adjunct Professor, Associate Professor, Substitute Professor) at the Universities of Saarbrücken, Düsseldorf and Trier, holding courses in Italian Linguistics, History of the Italian Language, Italian L2, Romance Linguistics and Old French.
He is a member of the following associations: ASLI (Associazione per la Storia della Lingua Italiana) and ASLI-scuola, Société de Linguistique Romane, SILFI (Società di Linguistica e Filologia Italiana), SLI (Società di Linguistica Italiana), DRV (Deutscher Romanistenverband); he is also a member of the Centro di Studi Filologici e Linguistici Siciliani (Palermo).
From 2015 to 2017 he was a member of the Asli Scientific Board; in the same three-year period, he was a member of the ASLI Scuola Scientific Board, too.
He is a member of the editorial staff of various journals: since 2012, of Revue de linguistique romane and Zeitschrift für Romanische Sprachen und ihre Didaktik; since July 2014, of Testi e linguaggi. Since November 2015, he has been a member of the scientific committee of the online journal (edited by I. Bonomi and M. Piotti) Lingue e culture dei media. He is the editor of the series Quaderni del Laboratorio LeGIt for the publisher Franco Cesati in Florence.
He is the managing director of the educational-scientific Laboratorio LeGIt “Lessico e Grammatica dell’Italiano” of the University of Salerno, where he manages and coordinates the following projects (with local funding): Me.Tr.O.polis (Memories, traces, horizons. Literacy and written culture in the Salerno area from Unification to the present time); Cor.TIBuS (“Corpus of Italian bureaucratic texts”);
as well as, with Rosa Piro and Mariafrancesca Giuliani, Le.M.M.A. “The medieval lexicon of medicine and nutrition”.
He is in charge of the Salerno research unit and a board member of the Inter-University Research Centre of Campania, LeItaLiE (“Lexicography of Italo-Romance and European Languages”), with administrative headquarters at the Orientale University in Naples (current Director: Rita Librandi).
He is a peer reviewer of national (Miur, Vqr, etc.) and international (Fonds national suisse de la recherche scientifique) research project, as well as of books, conference proceedings, specialist journals with double-blind peer review; he is a member of the think-tank of the University of Athens.
He is a member of the Ph.D. board in Linguistics (Rome, La Sapienza University in association with Roma Tre University); he has supervised, and continues to supervise, various Ph.D. dissertations (also as co-supervisor; ongoing, with the University of Corsica); he participated in various Ph.D. examination committees (also abroad) and in various comparative assessment processes (for researcher and Associate Professor).
He has been a member of scientific committees of several national and international conferences. He has organised conferences and seminars in his university and training workshops in historical lexicography in collaboration with the Universities “Federico II” and “Orientale” in Naples.
He collaborates in national and international lexicographical research projects: DéRom (Nancy, ATILF)l LEI (Saarbrücken); TLIO (Florence-CNR-OVI); since 2016, he has been co-editor, with Elda Morlicchio, of the section on Germanisms of LEI (from issue 11, which is approaching completion, of the Germanisms).
He has held many conferences at Italian and foreign universities, and has delivered some 90 speeches at national and international congresses, some of which as invited guest; exchange lecturer within the Erasmus programme and Visiting Professor at various foreign universities and research centres, including the Centre for Dialectology and Ethnography (CDE) in Bellinzona; In March 2017, he held a number of seminars at the Vrije Universiteit in Brussels as the holder of the Emile Lorand Chair.
His teaching activities include courses, seminars and lectures for teachers (S.I.C.S.I.; TFA ii cycle; hub of Naples of the Lincei Academy for secondary school; P.O.N. regional programmes for cooperation with schools), also abroad (in March 2017, at the Italian Institute of Culture in Brussels for teachers of Italian L2).
He has authored approximately 250 publications: books, as sole or joint author; articles; book chapters; reviews and data sheets, bibliographical notes and literature reviews in miscellaneous books and journals, including: Studi di Grammatica Italiana, Bollettino dell’OVI, Bollettino del Centro di studi filologici e linguistici siciliani, Contributi di Filologia dell’Italia Mediana, Zeitschrift für romanische Philologie, Testi e Linguaggi, Rivista italiana di onomastica; and also contributions to websites (Treccani/speciali Lingua italiana) and radio broadcasts (“La lingua batte”, RaiRadio3).
Current duties at the University of Salerno:
-Coordinator of the binational Italian-German degree course, LIDIT (Linguistics and teaching of Italian in the international context) launched in 2017/2018;
- a delegate of the Director of the Department of Humanities for internationalisation;
-responsible for Erasmus agreements with the Universities of Bonn, Berlin von Humboldt, Saarbrücken, Trier;
- tutor in training internships in agreement with the Italian Academy in Salerno;
- since 2012, responsible for PLIDA certification of Italian as a foreign language for the Società Dante Alighieri in Roma.
Funding and national and international research projects:
- September 2008 – September 2010: Principal Investigator of the Salerno research unit of PRIN 2007, Study, Archiving and Lexicon of Italian Vernacularizations (SALVIt), coordinated by R. Coluccia (University of Lecce). Title of the research unit (University of Salerno): Between Latin and the vernacular: words and texts of a technical-specialised language in the ancient Italian vernaculars.
- 2008-2011: member of the local Salerno research unit of IP (Intensive Programme) within the Lifelong Learning Programme (European Commission): Mnemo-Grafia Intercultural. Portugal, Itália e Alemanha em representações transmediais desde o século XIX, coordinated by the Universidade do Minho (Braga), with the participation of the Universities of Salerno and Hamburg.
- 2009-2012: member of the Salerno unit of FIRB, Loss, preservation and recovery of linguistic and cultural space in the second and third generation of Italian emigrants in the world: language, languages, identity. Italian language and culture as a value and an asset for new professionalisms in the emigrated communities (national coordinator: Massimo Vedovelli, University for Foreigners in Siena).
