Thesis title: I Quarantacinque giorni. Popolazione civile, militari, autorità locali e tedeschi nell’Italia del 1943
The thesis, entitled The Forty-Five Days. Civilian Population, Military, Local Authorities and Germans in 1943 Italy, aims to investigate the relations between civilians, military, authorities (as prefects, quaestors, mayors, bishops) and German troops during the crucial events revolving around 25 July and 8 September. Applying the methodology of social history, the research work recreates the intertwining of different perceptions of individual actors. The “civilization of war,” the frayed social relations, the fall of the regime, the assessment of the “red” danger, as well as distrust/trust of the German ally and the Anglo-American enemy generated a jumble of questions and interpretations, which would be crucial for the armistice period, the beginning of the German occupation and the civil war. At the heart of the research are several central Italian and German archives (ACS, AUSSME, Vatican Apostolic Archives, BA-MA Freiburg) and numerous local Italian archives.
